The goblin kingdom of Yibyorak was founded in 1172; it was absorbed by the Megalan empire in 1229. Partly conquest, partly mutual defence, partly bowing to the inevitable.
Goblin religion was dualistic; goblins worshipped Uunkuy, the god of civilisation, who opposed Bozdaag, the god of barbarism. The reptile men and hobgoblins did the reverse, while nobody paid much attention to what the kobolds thought.
Uunkuy-worship had a fairly similar structure to Catholicism; formal weekly rituals and a clergy structured on hierarchical lines with single authority at the top. This apparently eased the post-Megalan conversion to Catholicism. Uunkuy worship is almost unknown today, although many goblins will still invoke the names of Uunkuy and Bozdaag when cursing.
There’s also a weird cult known as the Brothers of Mercury. They’re basically the Yibyorak Thieves’ Guild. Thwip has heard of them, but knows nothing beyond that.
If Thwip thinks Hayu is bad, he should meet some of the people she’s grown up around. You didn’t think the criminal underground was nice did you? ::evil grin::
BTW: the Megalan conquest of Yibyorak had several causes.
Partly, Simon Menelaus (first Megalan Emperor) was just an exceptional military leader. Also, humans are a little bit bigger, stronger and more aggressive.
But mostly it was just that the humans were more organised. Organising goblins is like herding cats.
Incidentally, there’s an order of Catholic missionaries called the Olybrians. They’re named after St Olybrius, who was executed by the Goblin chieftains in 1194.
The Olybrian order have a lot of Goblin monks these days, working to bring the light of Christ to the pagans of the wild lands. They have a very brief average lifespan; most of Ytarria is either Catholic, Muslim, or violently inhospitable to missionaries. But some of them achieve heroic feats.
There are Jesuits as well, but they focus on political intrigue and questionable magical research. The original Jesuits were founded to counter Protestantism; in Ytarria, Protestantism is almost entirely suppressed apart from a handful of frightened Huguenots here and there.
The Hospitallers are anti-magic human-supremacist anti-Islamic crusaders based in New Jerusalem; the Templars are magic-loving political schemers with a military force that can match the Hospitallers. In Caithness, the Order of the Dragon serve the schismatic Church of Caithness, while the Order of the Stone serve the King.
The Franciscans look after the peasants, while the Michaelites enforce the law. The Thomasites study magic, natural philosophy and healing. The Constantinians specialise in administration and archive-keeping for the Imperial Court. The Olybrians are the main evangelists, the Alycites the main healers for the common people.
There’s also the Friedrichites, but they’re just weird. Hermits and ascetics; the regular Church tries to ignore them as much as possible.
If I had to put a pin in how she feels about him it’s “helpless as a blind kitten and about half the street smarts”. She’s a little concerned he’s going to end up with the same fate as Émile.
Oh, BTW, @Wanderfound, given the current state of her finances, Hayu won’t be booking a room. She might just make do with the roof (as nightwatch) or any nearby stable.
What I wrote is based on the assumption everyone minus Hayu is together in the room. But if the dwarfs are in the basement I’ll edit accordingly.
And I figure the others going out might be a good time to have Thwip work on repairing his rifle “off-screen”. But I guess that would also depend upon him needing some tools not in his kit or beyond his gizmo advantage. I can edit to reflect that too.
And if it’s all currently beyond what he can do in the inn, I’ll edit to have him grab Sasha and go to the healer.
The edit button is great. I can’t believe some folks wanted to get rid of it.
