A World Turned Upside Down: Australian News

If somebody means to re-take Byzantium for Jesus, Greco-Roman democracy and pretty little white children, then Australia strikes me as a rather inconvenient staging area for the campaign …

Nonsense. Everybody knows that you conquer Australia (Western Australia, Eastern Australia, Indonesia, and New Zealand) first, giving you the Continent bonus, then you take Siam, which only has borders with China and India, and from there you can push out easily with little Risk to your main base down under.

Context for furriners: letting these predatory bastards into the schools was a quite recent and highly controversial thing.

Genuine question but I understand if it comes off as rude: is there anyone in Australian politics who isn’t a demented bigot?

It seems all of the international reporting of politics in Australia makes it sound like it’s a choice between “fucking insane” or “slightly less fucking insane.”

This thread doesn’t do much to dispel that but is it really as bad as it seems from the outside?

Oh yeah, it’s bad. So bad it’s been embarrassing to say ‘I’m Australian’ to anyone who knows anything about Australian politics for at least a decade now. There was a brief respite when Julia Gillard was PM, but then more demented shit happened.

Depends on your point of reference. Most of our far-right loons would still be too moderate to make it through a GOP primary.

Part of it is that there is currently a slow civil war happening on the Australian right.

Most of the extremist minor parties (Hanson’s One Nation, Bernardi’s Australian Conservatives, Leyonhjelm’s Liberal Democrats) began as schisms from the mainstream right Liberal Party of Australia. Our electoral rules make it a lot easier for minor parties to gain and hold seats in the Senate.

It’s also worth remembering that there are minor parties on the left of Oz politics as well.

Etc.
