Bad doge, No Biscuit

So, if I’m reading this right (and I totally might not be, not an archivist, and all), there should be backup tapes for the computer systems currently under attack by Dodg-y? Here’s hoping the law requires monthly backups, as a minimum interval, so SSA, FAA, NOAA, etc., won’t have a super expensive effort to restore recent data/programming. :crossed_fingers:

Well, the law says there should be backups, yes, and most IT people tend to be very alert to this. These also tend to be the older, senior people unlike Musk’s Balls boy or whatever.

Depending on the IT person and policy, this is anywhere from a rolling 30 days (where the tape overwrites itself) to years. I just signed a PO to destroy tapes some idjit IT person was keeping “just in case” from the 80’s.

Without giving away things people would prefer to keep under the radar, I can say that some archivists have noticed these backups exist and have taken steps to preserve the data. Unfortunately, there was some practice given during the first administration, but no one expected it to happen this fast.

DOGE dilettantes ‘didn’t test’ Social Security fraud detection tool at appropriate scale

Well, I debunked most of it on a post earlier, but it figures that it was just completely made up.

BREAKING — DOGE will descend upon Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) buildings tomorrow, an agency source tells me.

FDIC is responsible for insuring all commercial/personal US bank accounts for up to $250k and regulating banks. Scary in light of Trump’s manipulation of markets this week.

It’s a good thing this isn’t likely to affect Tesla sales. Nope. Not at all. :smiling_imp:

DOGE operatives have also been quietly placed inside other federal agencies like the Social Security Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services — agencies that store some of the most sensitive personal data in the country, including on immigrants.

DOGE engineers now working inside DHS include Kyle Schutt, Edward Coristine (nicknamed “Big Balls”), Mark Elez, Aram Moghaddassi, and Payton Rehling. They’ve built the technical foundation behind a sweeping plan to revoke, cancel visas, and rewire the entire asylum process.

One of the most disturbing aspects of this plan? Flagging immigrants as “deceased” in the Social Security system — effectively canceling their SSNs. Without a valid Social Security number, it becomes nearly impossible to open a bank account, get a job, or even apply for a loan. The goal? Make life so difficult that people “self-deport.”

And if you’re marked as dead in the Social Security system, good luck fixing it. There’s virtually no path back — it’s a bureaucratic black hole.

You might ask: why do immigrants, asylum seekers, or refugees even have Social Security numbers? Because anyone authorized to work in the U.S. legally is issued one. It’s not just for citizens. It’s essential for participating in modern life — jobs, housing, banking, taxes. Without it, you’re locked out of society.

Last week, this plan was finalized in a high-level White House meeting that included DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, Antonio Gracias, senior DOGE operatives, and top administration officials.

In recent weeks, the administration has moved aggressively to strip legal protections from hundreds of thousands of immigrants and international students — many of whom have been living and working in the U.S. legally for years.

At the core of this crackdown? Data.

DOGE has access to your SSN, your income, your political donations — and more. What was once sold as a tool for “government efficiency” has become something else entirely: a weaponized surveillance machine.

And if you think this ends with immigrants, think again.

Antonio Gracias has already used DOGE’s access to Social Security and state-level data to push voter fraud narratives during past elections. The system is in place. The precedent has been set. And average Americans should be concerned.

However, the contracting documents also say that the tasks could be completed virtually, suggesting that they would not be subject to the same strict return-to-office requirements that have hamstrung FDA employees for weeks.

Now that’s what I call adding insult to injury.

People, including targeted citizens will become “non-persons”. This will, of course lead to unforeseen consequences, like an underground economic system that relies on cash and barter, because people will do what they need to do to survive.

We do this already in Canada to a degree, because we have a services tax, so tradespeople especially will give you the taxed rate if you pay by cheque, debit or credit, or a cheaper rate, often significantly lower if you pay with hard cash.

Yeah, good times coming soon.

I’ve noticed that more and more businesses here are offering a cheaper price for cash purchases than fot credit or debit card use. It’s almost like we’re getting practice for Tariff Time! :weary:
