I don’t have any actual evidence of this, but I feel quite confident in my assertion that Joe’s claims have not sparked any debate in the scientific community. I might be willing to consider a vigorous discussion of “how can we improve the quality of education” may have resulted from these claims, however.
I imagine any debate is mostly along the lines of “ugh, do we have to address this?”.

Also, I can see this making the rounds amongst conspiracy theorists in the early 1980ies on VHS without the end credits as a “banned documentary that shows the truth”.
