This pretty much summarises the right wing position on, well, everything.
Holy shit, the entire Republican party has gone Sov Cit, haven’t they?
Deep deep recession, huh? Where’s the line between deep deep recession and depression?
I need to go update the eggs thread. I went grocery shopping today. Eggs are up $2 a dozen over what they were just a couple of weeks ago. $8.50 a dozen. That’s just nuts.
Ideology?
“I worry that [the US Office of Personnel Management] itself doesn’t yet know how many workers were fired. It may be some time before it can report accurately to the [Bureau of Labor Statistics].”
Assuming the people from those offices and bureaus don’t also get fired, that is. There might not be anybody to do the reporting or anyone to report it to.
This is what occurs to me while watching those FAFO videos from Felon47 supporters who have been fired. They are going to the media and elected officials, but it might be a while before the whole ugly picture is visible to the masses. Just like repeating the “mandate” messaging, under-reporting how bad it gets also benefits the current regime.
Most workers and retirees are only one paycheck away from financial hardship. Thinking about the Great Recession made me wonder how mass firings and attacks on/slowdowns of payments like Social Security could cause a spike in homelessness. This article contains a lot of stats about the risks, stages, causes, and criminalization:
It might be a bitter pill to swallow, but you and I are much closer to becoming homeless than turning into the next Elon Musk—with plenty of Americans being one medical emergency away from homelessness.

This covers foreclosures during the Great Recession and pandemic years, as well as improvement since then:
Even among the 38% living in a house that is paid for, workers and retirees can still lose them through delinquent tax sales conducted by the state:
People in my area are not only posting about local tax increases being unaffordable, but also insurance premiums.
YEP! This is going to be very, very bad! Especially if congress gets their “the landlord can kick you out with 3 days notice” bill passed.
Yeah, I was just wondering aloud why the article seemed reluctant to use the word ‘depression’.
The term depression is archaic. The word recession is equivalent in modern standards.
“Depression” is too depressing.
Before “depression” they used “panic.” Also not very helpful.
Insurance in so many states is allowed to essentially red-line. My insurance rates for cars and home have been ridiculously high forever because my 5-digit zip code includes (oh, the horror ) black people. We could never fix this under the 30+ years of Gerrymandering Republicans inflicted on Michigan, and I guess there wasn’t enough time in 2 years with a Democratic super-majority to fix everything, but as harm goes to average tax payers (of any skin color), this racist pricing of insurance seemed like it should’ve been kinda high on the list.
And then this past week a huge water transmission main failed in SW Detroit, submerging an entire neighborhood. Most folks in Detroit do not have home or meaningful auto insurance. Because red-lining prices them out. This disaster is going to cost Detroit’s water and sewer system millions of dollars they don’t have. Hundreds of people have lost their furnaces and water heaters (these are typically housed in basements, which were flooded by the water main break). The water authority claims they will make homeowners “whole”, but that’s a load of shit - governmental immunity will keep most of the insurance claims against the authority unpaid. I do hope the state helps out, no one buying or renting a house in this neighborhood could possibly have predicted getting flooded out by a water main break.
Is that the one I saw a video clip of, where it flooded and then froze over solid and the cars and trucks were encased in ice up to their hoods? That looked downright apocalyptic. I can’t imagine much of anything caught up in that being salvageable.
I think it must’ve been. I saw some too, wondered if it was AI.
Let’s hope something gives, and this isn’t the direction we’re headed.
Yes, something… something…
The Capitalist Dude referenced there is Tim Gurner, an ultra wealthy property developer in Australia. Which explains his perspective. People working from home during and after COVID devalued a lot of office buildings. He made those comments in September 2023. It went viral and he was absolutely ripped to shreds online. He ended up issuing a bullshit apology. His feefees were still hurting, though, so he went to a luxury wellness clinic (which he founded), worked with his breathing guru, and then he felt fine again. So happy for him. Fucking dick.
