It’s long been the case that putting an application in online is a dead end. Go in person, contact someone you know or who you have some kind of connection with, reach out to the hiring manager directly - those are the only ways to get a job. Sending an application into the automated system is basically feeding it to a shredder. That was true before the systems were called “AI” and will remain true once the fad is over.
I’m hearing people saying that the dollar is going to take a dive tomorrow. Wouldn’t surprise me.
This guy is an attorney. He also opened up a restaurant and a comedy club, and is trying stand up himself. Apparently this was part of his standup. It may not be very funny, but it’s pretty educational.
I’m just surprised it’s taken so long.
Robert Reich explains why tariffs cost consumers more, and how the current regime is making things worse for workers and low income households:
None of that should need explaining, but here we are.
One thing I wish these videos would do is explain why tariffs aren’t paid by the foreign government or foreign corporations. Because when I’ve told people that tariffs are paid for by the importing company, they either don’t believe me, or they tell me that there’s not any reason we can’t make these countries pay the tariffs instead of us paying them. The reason why is actually pretty simple.
The United States government has no ability to tax a foreign sovereign nation. If we sent them a tax bill, why would they pay it? Who would make them? We don’t have any jurisdiction over them. Now, we do impose some income taxes on foreign corporations, but those taxes are often reduced, and sometimes even waived, and they are controlled by income tax treaties. These are negotiated treaties we have with various nations. And they’re reciprocal. They specify how we tax foreign corporations that do business in the US and the specify how foreign nations tax American corporations that do business there. We can’t impose more taxes on these companies without renegotiating these treaties. Our government does, however, have jurisdiction to tax domestic corporations that import products from overseas, so this is what they do. They impose the tariff on the only entity they can force to pay it: the US based importer.
Sure, same as you can also just make the manager at a retail store pay the sales tax on the things in your shopping cart instead of you paying the sales tax.
Of course, if you try, you’ll get kicked out and banned and not allowed to shop there anymore. But there’s no reason you can’t say that they have to pay it.
It’s magical thinking like sovereign citizen nonsense - all you have to do is just say some magic words and then the rules don’t apply to you, right?
Historically, the whole “make the exporting country pay tariffs” was the cause of multiple wars until colonialism and imperialism found new and creative ways to start pointless wars.
This pretty much summarises the right wing position on, well, everything.
Holy shit, the entire Republican party has gone Sov Cit, haven’t they?
Deep deep recession, huh? Where’s the line between deep deep recession and depression?
I need to go update the eggs thread. I went grocery shopping today. Eggs are up $2 a dozen over what they were just a couple of weeks ago. $8.50 a dozen. That’s just nuts.
Ideology?
“I worry that [the US Office of Personnel Management] itself doesn’t yet know how many workers were fired. It may be some time before it can report accurately to the [Bureau of Labor Statistics].”
Assuming the people from those offices and bureaus don’t also get fired, that is. There might not be anybody to do the reporting or anyone to report it to.
This is what occurs to me while watching those FAFO videos from Felon47 supporters who have been fired. They are going to the media and elected officials, but it might be a while before the whole ugly picture is visible to the masses. Just like repeating the “mandate” messaging, under-reporting how bad it gets also benefits the current regime.
Most workers and retirees are only one paycheck away from financial hardship. Thinking about the Great Recession made me wonder how mass firings and attacks on/slowdowns of payments like Social Security could cause a spike in homelessness. This article contains a lot of stats about the risks, stages, causes, and criminalization:
It might be a bitter pill to swallow, but you and I are much closer to becoming homeless than turning into the next Elon Musk—with plenty of Americans being one medical emergency away from homelessness.

This covers foreclosures during the Great Recession and pandemic years, as well as improvement since then:
Even among the 38% living in a house that is paid for, workers and retirees can still lose them through delinquent tax sales conducted by the state:
People in my area are not only posting about local tax increases being unaffordable, but also insurance premiums.
YEP! This is going to be very, very bad! Especially if congress gets their “the landlord can kick you out with 3 days notice” bill passed.
Yeah, I was just wondering aloud why the article seemed reluctant to use the word ‘depression’.
The term depression is archaic. The word recession is equivalent in modern standards.
“Depression” is too depressing.
Before “depression” they used “panic.” Also not very helpful.
