Engineer here. About a dozen years ago, a thoughtful colleague mentioned reading about this phenomenon. I briefly thought about it and said “Well, we have very useful knowledge about how to very effectively make the things society uses stop working. Then, if you’re a chemical engineer, there’s the knowledge of explosives… [shrug]” He said “Yes, but that doesn’t address motivation. I think a lot of engineers chose the career path because they aren’t good at effective persuasive speech. And tunnel vision is an occupational hazard. When someone is stuck on an idea and doesn’t have skills to persuade with words, I think the risk of extremism goes up.”
It’s a conversation that stuck with me.
Reading this made me wonder whether the phenomenon could be (in part) the result of a very pathological form of engineers’ fallacy.
