- That’s still too damn high. If Tesla can somehow maintain its sales volume from the previous year (uh, sure…), that still puts the Price / Earning ratio above 50. But since volume has fallen off a cliff, and steep discounts are being offered to save it, a p/e ratio above 100 sounds like a safe guess. By comparison, Toyota has had a steady p/e ratio of around 10 over the past decade.

Yesterday’s White House stunt had all the hallmarks of Trump corruption, but there was something else, too—an air of desperation. It was a tacit admission that the protests are working and that Musk and Trump are rattled enough by current sentiment that they’re willing to turn the South Lawn into a showroom.
Musk’s deep sighs on cable TV and emergency Tesla junkets on the White House lawn are hints that he may be beginning to understand the precariousness of his situation. He is well known for his high risk tolerance, overleveraging, and seemingly wild business bets. But his role at DOGE represents the biggest reputational and, consequently, financial gamble of his career. Musk is playing a dangerous game, and he looks to be losing control of the narrative.

At the time Tesla’s share price was not too different from today and it was far lower in early 2023. Therefore I assume that there is still some room left before things get really dangerous.
But I would love to know the details of that deal. Bits and pieces have been reported, but all the most interesting questions remain unanswered.

Funding that existed while he was selling at least twice as many cars as he is now. And no one dumping their Teslas into the used market.
He’s a dipshit, but even he should understand that when a person sells a car at a loss because they are angry at the brand, those customers are gone forever, no more repeat buyers.
This will be a case study in business schools for decades to come.
