Fascists and Antifascists doxxing, attacking, and using others as whatever the online equivalent of a meat-shield is… I mean… that’s why I don’t think anyone should be on Twitter. Like if it is the place to go to research fascism or participate in/engage with it one way or another, then there’s no reason for anyone else to be there really.
Doxxing nazis is important work.
I Don’t Speak German
Daniel Harper is a researcher who goes where few others can bear to go: he listens to what the reactionaries - from the IDW to the modern day Nazis - say to each other in their safe spaces! In this timely and shocking - but entertaining - anti-fascist podcast, Daniel tells his friend, online writer Jack Graham, all about it.
More on doxxed nazis mostly done by law enforcement:
They don’t deserve any sort of privacy.
I guess it makes sense if one or two people in the resistance can get their hands on the latest issue of Völkischer Beobachter just so we can keep tabs on what the other side is up to but I don’t think that means most of us should give the organization support through our subscriptions.
BlueSky is pretty good, based on my somewhat limited experience of it, and it’s open to everyone (no access codes needed to sign up.)
As far as Twitter goes… I locked my account there before the election, and I basically stopped posting once Musk took over. There are still some very positive voices fighting the good fight on that platform, but the sugar-to-shit ratio is getting exponentially worse.
I consider deleting that account every damn day, but I don’t like the thought of losing contact with some of those good folks, and while it’s extremely unlikely, I don’t want some chud taking over my username and spreading fascist crap with it. I had some small hope that, if the Democrats won, Twitter would lose enough money to fall into other, better hands, but that won’t happen now. >sigh< I’ll probably delete the account soon, once I finish working through my innate stubbornness.
I do. I like it. It doesn’t collate threadrolls particularly well, but the blocking, muting, and instance separation are mwah.
Dumb question. What is the ElsewhereCafe Twitter account?
I admit that I initially had problems with Bluesky due to the Jack Dorsey connection. Why join a site controlled by the Twitter-founder who wants to slap-fight Elon?
However, Dorsey seems to have walked away from it. That’s a plus.
I haven’t had much occasion to use it, but it would be useful to have a way to communicate if/when the site is down.
True.
True. That was meant more as a joke on that description of it than a commentary on the account
That author needs to not launch rockets in a glass house.
If you could communicate at the speed of light, as many laser-based satellite transmissions can, the speed at which you can load anything is still dependent on the speed of light. That 250 million miles takes 22 minutes and 22 seconds for light (or information) to traverse. Petabit/second speeds between Mars and Earth are impossible until we develop faster-than-light travel, which is, you know, not possible based on our current understanding of physics.
Except the speed of light doesn’t make much difference to the bandwidth. Scale up the number of transmitters and you could hit a petabit/s easy.
Getting the latency below 22 minutes, yeah, that’s a trick.
Never underestimate the bandwidth of a rocket carrying sd cards.
But all you really need is communication via quantum entanglement! I’m sure it’s only five years away. Place your orders now!
I love one short story I read about FTL comms.
There was always a glitch at the beginning of the message. There was nothing they could do to get rid of it. They just resigned themselves to clipping it out before playing the message.
Turns out the bit at the beginning was every message that was or will be sent by the method
So, the blockchain?
