I have a Mastodon account but the whole instance thing was wildly confusing to me, so iâve spent maybe 2 minutes looking around and never went back 
not a criticism of Mastodon specifically, well⌠maybe, but even Twitter wasnât something i enjoyed using.
Iâm probably putting too much thought into it, and you can move instances later if you want. I tend to think of it like an email address. You are who you are, but youâre @ a host. I just want to find the right host to be from. The amount of time I have spent getting my personal email address just right has been a multi-decade journey, so I might be a bit of an outlier anyway.
Itâs a good thing to carefully consider which instance your on. I used Mastodon occasionally until the instance I was using was shut down by the admin.
Thereâs the rub, isnât it? You can move but you donât want to be on an instance thatâs run by absolute arsesholes. If i were to go on there i would have a look around at people or organisations whose values i share to see what instance they are using.
