Uh oh…
So presuming pope Francis croaks, will the council of cardinals select a left-ish pope, or another Ratzenberger?
I was wondering about that… Given that Francis was the first “global south” pope (although his family came from Italy), I would not be surprised if they finally (after like 1000 years or whatever it’s been) elect an African pope, but one who is deeply conservative to try to “please” everyone.
I will say, Francis was shit on LGBQT+ rights and other issues around gender and family, but he was right on about climate change and social and economic inequality. He also at least tried to give women a bit more of say in leadership positions (appointing a woman in the Vatican)… obviously he did not go far enough… He put out some (what are they called? encyclicals?) writing that challenged the neo-liberal economy pretty strongly (ignoring that oppressing LBGQT+ and women are a part of that), which is, not too bad for such a well-entrenched, conservative organization like the Catholic church… I doubt that they’ll make that mistake again, though.
I don’t think the pope daring to criticize Trump and then being struck down by a plague afterward is going to mean anything to anyone who isn’t already beyond the pale, but I don’t want to hear about it anyway.
Never attribute to god that which is adequately explained by the FSB/CIA.
