I don’t know how to express this in a way where it won’t come out wrong, but considering how much effort was put into this process, I would say this is incontrovertible evidence that Harvard is doing the right thing to uphold academic standards, proving that “DEI” doesn’t mean you keep non-white non-male professors who are doing wrong but rather hold them to the same high standards.

Yeah, I don’t think Harvard has gotten this right every time – or probably most times over the years! – but for the business school, of all places, to fire one of their own shows a level of integrity I didn’t expect.

So… “Latino”? I mean, it may depend on how narrow the definition is. Sometimes was as narrow as “not of anglic or dutch origin” (To exclude irish, italian and german inmigrants). Race dinamics in the US is a whole different level as in classist based europe

As a China Swede Mongol I can say that Anglo-Saxons are crazy.

As someone of mostly Anglo-Saxon ancestry, I concur.

So, conditionally white?

And @Heikki, as someone whose ancestors are English, Scottish and Swedish, (descended from the House of Duffus, thank you!) I absolutely agree.

No body part can maintain that phone. So, it’s not just holding it. I know a lot of drivers put their phone on their lap, and that’s going to be illegal here in a couple weeks," said Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Rocco Gagliardi.

“You are still not allowed to pull up that device at a red light, stuck in traffic. That law is very lengthy and real specific,” Gagliardi said.

Italians? Depends on where, of course. In the US, they were

Not in the U.S.

Legally, white in the US was individuals of European, Middle Eastern, or North African descent. For a while- Mexicans were considered white in the census.

Social status is another matter of course. But it’s hard to imagine anyone thinking Italians are not white here. Especially the dudes who glorify the Roman Empire.

Dunno about that. Those of Italian descent are still othered in parts of the South—Catholics are not real Christians, not just foreign but from New Jersey, insert mafia “joke” here…

Also, those Roman Empire glorifiers are the same assholes who insist that Jesus was a blue-eyed blond, so historical accuracy isn’t the foundation of their beliefs.

Being anti Catholic doesn’t mean you don’t consider someone non white who is Catholic.

I’m sure there are people who disparage Italians. But being in the mafia doesn’t make you non white either.

Totally agree that today it is the case. But I vaguely remember ID cards classifiying spaniards and italians as “mediterranean” race.

If only because in europe we do like make that difference ourselves. I mean, my roman ancestors would cry in pain if I associated myself with those northern barbars!

ETA: (nevermind i probably descend from either nothern barbars - the goths - or southern moors)

Some weird shit in legal history here; as always.

As a Hispanic with brown skin I can’t tell you how annoying to me it is to answer the US Census and other gov forms and having to pick “Other” for my race. Having to label myself as Other doesn’t feel great, but at the end of the day I know that the concept of race is a pretty malleable weird thing

“Some”?

How the hell does “We pardon you for thing X that you did on date D” also cover unrelated thing Y that occurred on date F? Did the pardons say “thing X and also any other thing you may have done at any other time”?

Wow, so they’re doubling down despite the boycott. Maybe they’ve decided to pucker up and hope :tangerine:  will give them a break:

I hope enough of their regular customers got used to shopping elsewhere now - so they never go back.
