Absolutely worth the play if you haven’t. Dig 2 is superior in many ways but you’ll never get that feeling of digging into the unknown like you with the first game.

I came here to post the same. Fantastic game. I agree that #2 is better, but they both have their charm. I’d recommend the entire franchise(80+% off right now), which has a wide(ish) variety of genres represented.

Speaking of Steamworld Dig 2:

Not free, but nearly so at $1.19. If that’s too much of a barrier and you’re serious about wanting it, PM me.

Reasons why Dig2 is better:

  • In very uncommon but possible circumstances, you can run out of the ability to climb and thus be stuck, unable to move. You just have to die then, which is generally considered unfun. 2 completely prevents this.
  • Much bigger story, lots more powers, some very light puzzle challenges
  • Ties in to the first story multiple times, making it a true sequel, for those who love their lore
  • Death mechanic is a lot more forgiving

Reasons why Dig1 is better:

  • Hard to forget your first time diving into the unknown
  • The sheer “you’re completely on your own”-ness of the game is survival-lite and adds an element of edge to the game that really makes it sparkle.

To agree more with @LockeCJ , they have games in lots of genres. Steamworld Heist Quest is a card RPG that’s about as deep as you want it to be. There’s also a city builder and a couch co-op game too I believe, although those aren’t my jam so I didn’t look into them.

edit: Updated Heist to Quest

Minor correction. I believe you’re referring to Steamworld Quest:

Steamworld Heist (and it’s recent sequel) are more like 2D XCOM:

Steamworld Build is a city builder that also has underground sections reminiscent of Dungeon Keeper:

I’m not aware of any game in the Steamworld franchise that is couch co-op.

Also worth mentioning is that the art direction, world building, and aesthetic of the entire franchise is, if not unique, certainly atypical. I find it to be extremely charming.

Tapping Steam Powered Giraffe for the music in Heist and Heist 2 was an inspired decision, IMO.

I’ve never heard of this series, but thanks to both of you I picked it up and will get around to playing it some day… probably. (I have a massive backlog, so I can’t promise, but assuming I live long enough…)

I love this thread, have picked up a lot of games here that I wouldn’t have even known were available otherwise.

The first one is relatively short, and the second one is a bit longer.
HLTB has this to say:

5 to 8.5

7.5 to 13.5

I’ve clocked ~20 hours in the first and completed it, and ~16 in the second, but I haven’t finished the story in that one, although I suspect I’m close.

Civ VI Platinum free on Epic for the next week. This is a version that includes a bunch of the DLC and expansions, so worth it even if you have the base game.
