Genderbender: Sexual Identity and Gender Identity

… Yeah, I’m calling bullshit on that article as well.

I’ve been on this ball of dirt for 45+ years, and I still don’t know what ‘my type’ is; it’s entirely possible that I’m not attracted to anyone, which is also a possibility.

More seriously and on topic, as I began to identify as nonbinary, and put more thought into various issues of sex and gender, I realized it made sense to redefine how I think of my sexual identity as well. Straight/gay/bi all assume a binary.

I went from “I’m straight (and also afraid of being perceived as not straight” to “I am mostly attracted to women” to “I am generally attracted to women and to feminine and androgynous presenting people, but not particularly turned on or off by their genitals” but it kind of doesn’t matter anyway because I’m quite happily married.

My spouse identifies as “stubbornly bisexual, not pansexual” but says that this doesn’t exclude nonbinary folks.

“These days it’s clear that no one chooses their sexual orientation. It’s a matter of fate, not choice. Sexual orientation — or what experts call a ‘sexual preference structure’ — develops during puberty, influenced by a person’s sex hormones. Their sexuality is determined in adolescence — what they find physically attractive and the kind of sexual interactions they desire.”

I am gonna disagree with this statement. “Attraction” is frequently, but not always, apparent in fairly early childhood. There is certainly a social aspect, in the sense that “unacceptable” attraction tends to draw social opprobrium, and as always there is a spectrum along which it will develop.

Sexuality development in childhood.

Children’s sexuality has been a taboo subject in many societies, but its existence is undeniable.

This is probably the heart of it. It is incredibly hard to study a topic that will inevitably get you painted by some a creeper at best. Both professional and personal experience suggests that it does not arrive de novo with adolescence. It most certainly changes in character at that point, no doubt! But it is present far earlier in development than that.

The ACLU has an excellent tracker on LGBTQ (apparently not IA+?) bills in state government attacks. You can drill down into individual bills, sort by specific issues or status of the bills, etc.

Eh, those letters don’t get a lot of press, even hate press. Tough to “ban” intersex, since it is a recognized state found at birth in a small number of individuals, and asexuals get ignored (not unlike trans men) because they don’t fit into the “they are coming for your daughter!” scare tactics.

True, but the more groups allied together, the better.

Bigots like Rowling have mocked ace people but it seems like it would be hard to actually target them with a bill. I suppose eventually attacks on single or childless people could cover a lot of them though.

Oh, I am sure the pro-natalists will come for them eventually. Just tough to shoehorn that group into “Danger! Danger!” sorts of craziness.

I have recently seen the acronym MOGAI for “Marginalized Orientations, Gender Identity & Intersex” which is meant to be fully inclusive without having to add more letters. Also faster to say out loud

I like that, I only hope it catches on. I would have no idea if I heard that until now.
