The Comics Code Authority, the Hays Code (why does this crap so often start with Postmasters General?), and similar industry groups all followed that pattern before (some still do) and in every case seriously damaged creativity for many decades. While I know there are more direct threats to our freedoms and to our lives, seeing a return to this type of organizational self-censorship sickens me.

I think that the more dangerous, authoritarian stuff are certainly underpinned by this stuff. They go together. We should care about corporate self-censorship because of how it helps the really violent stuff that will follow.

Facebook is on the defensive after a whistleblower leaked thousands of documents showing how the company failed to control the spread of false information and lies about the 2020 election.
In an internal report, Facebook staff concluded that the company “helped incite the Capitol Insurrection.” Leaked documents show how the company was unable to stop the growth of pro-Trump “Stop the Steal” groups and conspiracy theories.
