If you are paddling the Petawawa in Algonquin Park :canada:, the park rangers maintain a few springs. The water comes out very cold and filtered through millennia of sand deposits. The better maps of the park (Jeff’s Maps are my favourite by far) have these marked. Filling our water bottles from those made for a really pleasant trip.

Otherwise: bring a filter.

If you drink straight out of the river there’s a decent chance you won’t be able to paddle more than 30m from shore for a couple of days, and a solidly non-zero risk of a case of Beaver Fever.

Colloquially named for the popular understanding that the parasite in question is endemic to slow-moving water near the dams constructed by our industrious national mascot. Like the capital of Saskatchewan, it’s one of those terms :canada: say with a perfectly straight face as a point of national pride.

Among those who signed it were a self-described journalist, a certified public accountant, a firefighter/paramedic, a certified health coach and someone who said they had a bachelor’s degree “with an emphasis on Jungian Psychology.” The signers include at least 75 nurses, as well as physician assistants. More than 90 did not include any credentials at all.

Over 20 were chiropractors…

Dr. Rhys Parry from the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences confirmed the presence of Camp Hill virus in shrews in Alabama, USA.

“Henipaviruses have caused serious disease and death in people and animals in other regions,” Dr Parry said

“One of the most dangerous is the Hendra virus, which was first detected in Brisbane, Australia, and has a fatality rate of 70 percent.

“Another example is Nipah virus which has recorded fatality rates between 40 and 75 per cent in outbreaks in Southeast Asia, including in Malaysia and Bangladesh.

Transgender Youth Health Services | UVA Health Children’s

Gender Health Services Impacted by Executive Order

In response to the recent federal executive order and related Commonwealth of Virginia, Office of the Attorney General guidance, UVA Health has suspended all gender-affirming care for patients under 19 years of age. Like many health systems across the country, the University of Virginia and UVA Health are working to analyze and interpret the federal order and related state guidance, as well as monitoring other potential policy changes and impacts to ensure we are always delivering care in accordance with the law.

Patient appointments will be maintained to discuss specific care options in compliance with the most recent guidance.

UVA Health remains committed to being a community of healing, compassion, and respect for all.

Diagnosis From a Mental Health Professional

In order for one of our clinical providers to discuss treatment, we require a diagnosis of gender dysphoria. This term is used when a child’s sense of their gender differs from the sex assigned to them at birth.

Our care team can provide referrals to the appropriate mental health professionals.

For Parents of Trans Youth

We encourage parents and families to attend appointments. If your parents or family members have questions or need support, we can help. Find out how we support parents.

AIUI, they are looking for a loophole or something to allow some sort of provision of care, most likely referring to out-of-state providers. I know some of these docs well, and they are taking this very hard, and very personally. We will figure something out, but the way it has been currently put out by the administration, providing these services will result in being banned from Medicare and Medicaid. No hospital can survive that. I don’t know what comes next, honestly. And I don’t know what will come for us in the outpatient section. We’re in trouble, folks.

Any treatment for trans patients, e.g. for trans broken arm syndrome, could expose them to prosecution.
