The meter arrived Monday, … it reported as much as 230 ppm, which is incredibly dangerous if it’s not a glitch, and long periods above 10 ppm.
Do you have a gas furnace?
Get someone to call the gas company for you, IMMEDIATELY.
It’s dangerous for you, obviously, but could also take out the block, so they’ll get over there pronto.
I called the fire department Saturday night, they couldn’t detect anything.
I thought yesterday’s 230 ppm might be a glitch as the meter started up. It settled down to 6 ppm overnight.
But today it hit 247 ppm in the kitchen with the fume hood running. … I don’t think that’s a glitch. I was struggling to breathe in there.
Somehow you’ve got to leave that house till this is fixed. If it suddenly gets worse while you’re asleep, you may never wake up. This is an emergency.
It turns out that steam can throw off the meter. Which probably explains some of the high readings in the kitchen, laundry room, and bathroom.
So hand-cranked paper shredders tend to be incredibly flimsy, and have tiny handles which don’t allow a good grip.
And electric ones tend to be incredibly loud, even if they’re advertised as “quiet.”
I don’t want to screw up the pasta machine, but I’d like something just as sturdy. Solid metal parts, full-sized crank, etc. Has anyone used a pasta machine as a paper shredder? Can anyone recommend something suitable?
I can only suggest YouTube. There must be a James Hoffman of pepper grinders.
This one might be a bit sturdier, given that it can shred CDs and credit cards:
This looks like it might work also, although it looks a lot less convenient:
For some reason, none of the pictures show them cutting paper, only seaweed.
I have a hard time getting a comfortable grip with tha kind of handle.
I’ve used regular scissors to cut up paper for kitty litter when my shredder was clogged. Sloppy, but I got the job done.
What about an old fashioned paper cutter?

How well do they work for shredding?
P.S. Mine gets kinda loud and messy and requires frequent sharpening.
What about herb scissors? Can’t do much at a time, but the shredding part would work.
Just thinking if it wasn’t too much stuff that you could chop it up finely.
We’ve had a lot of fly trouble. I suspect it’s the open-topped kitchen compost bin. I understand it’s important to let the bins get air, but could a bin with a very closely spaced mesh filter work?
Cover with a charcoal filter. Better to take it out as often as possible to the outdoors rather than sitting in your kitchen, covered or not.
There are cut-outs in the rim, so that won’t work.
Is it indoors or outside?
It’s in the kitchen.
