ICE checkpoints in random Californian cities, far from the border, is quite the escalation. I wonder if they’re using the “100 miles from the border (i.e. ocean)” justification, or they’ve given up all pretense of following any sort of rule or law.
So it does, indeed, turn out that the official policy won’t be for ICE to stand down during these events, but actually ramp things up:
Anyone coming into the US to attend these events would have to be a masochist at the very least. Hell, anyone attending would have to be masochist. If non-citizens have to carry proof of legal status, that means everyone does. Which means US citizens attending could be detained by ICE…
From LAX?
Even more ridiculous than that. According to the story, they had a checkpoint set up in Sacramento (which is up in Northern California), which would mean 100 miles from the friggin ocean. (Because we have so many people coming here on boats that don’t go into ports. Well, “so many,” “zero,” tomatoe, tomatoh.) That would mean the entire state (or at least the parts of the state where people actually live) would be in the “border zone.”
The White House is demanding that ICE get deportations up, and ordering any career law enforcement who objects to get the hell out of the way.
The head of ICE’s Enforcement and Removal operations apparently resigned rather than obey an order to fire ICE officers who weren’t hitting arrest quotas!
No cattle cars available?
