Seriously one of the best performances of it I have heard.
Paul Simonās Graceland was my first exposition to āworldā music (technically I should count Byrneās Rei Momo, but as it was mixed with south american music which I already listened a lot at home⦠but I digress). I had this album taped on a cassete that got thin from overuse even before I could understand the lyrics.
Iām glad to say that at least for me the album holds quite well the value. I love the complex basslines which are a signature of african pop whenever I found it, and the lyrics that seem to seamlessly switch between the personal, the evocative and the whimsical.
YT sent me this out of the blue. Once again, The Mighty Algorithm knows me better than I know myself. Yes, I had this record. Iād forgotten. Although I was a very serious, smart and sad Joy Division / Wire / 4AD lad I had a soft spot for pretty girls in synth-pop fluff:
Iāve heard that but never knew what it was.
I know three things about them:
-
Itās the only band that Bill Drummond discovered while he was an A&R man.
-
They were big in Japan.
-
One of them is or was mostly likely a some sort of a fascist.
Number 3 is news to me. Ugh.
The Boyd Rice connection?
Among other things.
Her curiosity only intensified after she and her husband fell in with Genesis P-Orridge, which led to even darker pursuitsāin an extensive interview, Bryson claims McDowall developed an obsession with Nazi history, going so far as to hang a Nazi flag in her apartment. While McDowall emphatically denies the claim, her collaborations with suspect artists like Boyd Rice and Death in June in the intervening years seem unwise at best.
I keep reposting this video:
When you are corresponding with fucking James Mason you aināt just curious.
Just came here to post this!
Damn, Rose!
Is Jill still cool?
AFAIK yes.
