Two thoughts:
1 Can you share the desk? Alternatively, if he has one could you get one too?
2 Is there a library or coffee shop nearby?

That looks pretty sturdy, but considering how heavy CRT monitors were, hanging one directly over your face like that seems like a bad idea. Sure the cats might not be able to knock it down, but they can be creative. And with a chair that reclined the chances of dozing out frequently and not noticing until the monitor smashes into your face and wakes you up seem fairly probable.
