Love in the Time of COVID-19

Probably true, since covid-19 is now exactly that. Fuckā€¦

The long-term effects of that beast will give rise to a whole new area of medical specialization. I very much hope it is not one I will have need of.

I recently learned thereā€™s an infectious disease specialty, due to my latent TB diagnosis.

Something I could do without knowing.

Weā€™re kicking around 10 to 15 cases per 100k in Ontario :canada: right now, but thatā€™s wildly under-reported. Our lab test positivity is running around 15%, where 10% used to be the point where the government would batten the hatches. Death rate is still around 1% of the case rate.

The indicators are trending up, have been since early summer.

(I know of two cases last month that werenā€™t reported )

Mask use is minimal. Nobody seems to get a hard time for it, though, which is good. Store employees especially seem to be masking up.

Yeah, finding as ID doc walking into your life might be worse than an oncologist. Glad they exist, gladder not to need one.

A resource for COVID-19 research and information. Very useful to counter common Covid-minimizing tactics, such as ā€œCovid is mild now,ā€ ā€œWhat about the economy?ā€ and ā€œKids donā€™t get it.ā€

ā€œYou Have To Live Your Life is an information resource created in response to a vacuum of accurate public health information about COVID-19. It provides relevant research and articles for common misconceptions about the virus, and is designed and maintained by chrisisgr8.ā€

Thereā€™s also the Peopleā€™s CDC, which I have found helpful in the past:

Of course, everyone here knows about the N95, but have you looked into the P100 any? It provides even better protection.

These are what I thought a P100 had to be, no doubt very effective, but the sort of thing which would get one barred from many stores, especially in Covid minimizing areas. (Isnā€™t that everywhere these days?)

But Iā€™ve since discovered there are much more discreet options, such as this:

To the casual observer, this doesnā€™t look much different than an N95, and shouldnā€™t preclude participation in most public places. Admittedly, it doesnā€™t protect the eyes, but if that is a concern, even glasses do a good, if not perfect, job of protecting them.

36 (not ten) Ways That Covid Infection Can Open The Door To Other Infections

This may be more info than anyone not in the medical profession needs, but might be useful for Covid skeptics.

With Covid still quietly raging and H5N1 slowly spreading, what a perfect time to vote in the party that wants to torch the Affordable Care Act.

Might be a good idea to update every vaccination thatā€™s needed by early January.

Last month, the CDC announced that theyā€™re partnering with Walgreens to develop a test for bird flu in people. As their release says, the program wants to prepare for ā€œthe symptoms and risk factors for infection with H5N1 bird flu among higher-risk populations,ā€ including dairy and poultry workers. This comes after recent news that bird flu is spreading much more widely than anyone predicted and human spillover continues at rates nobody thought possible.

Weā€™ve seen this movie before.

Everything you ever wanted to know about bird flu but were afraid to ask.

The CDC has recently shared videos telling how to identify symptoms. Translation: Itā€™s here.

(Iā€™m certainly dominating the thread as of late.)

Thank you for sharing that. I need to read through that, but I was struck by this:

Given that:

I get that their plans extend into 2027, but that seems like an interesting detail if the jointly developed test would be intended to be distributed by the (now shrinking) Walgreens network of stores.

Allegedly due to low uptake and cost concerns, but anti-vaxxers were involved in the decision.

ā€¦ while in here in Ontario :canada: you donā€™t even need a health card for the flu vaccine or COVID vaccines.

COVID-19 vaccines are available to everybody aged 6 months and older in Ontario at no cost, regardless of citizenship or immigration status, even if you do not have an Ontario health card.

Records are kept, yes, but since the flu vaccine campaigns started ~2003 the decision was made just to vaccinate anyone who showed up, rather than get picky and leave a block of people walking around spreading disease.
