I appreciate the speed and (relative) convenience of long-distance air travel. It has enabled more people to see more of the world than ever before, at a surprisingly affordable price and with genuinely amazing safety.
But I do feel we lost something great when the ocean liners died out. And the dedicated cruise ships, overgrown hotels on the sea, are not a worthy replacement.

The design choices were also primarily influenced by a silent partner in the project â the Pentagon. Military naval architects were involved in the design from the beginning, with a plan to use the ship to move 15,000 troops to Europe if the Cold War turned hot, according to an official history of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard published in 2002.
âThe U.S. government worked in conjunction with the United States Lines to develop a âsuper shipâ to be part Cold War weapon and part luxury ocean liner,â according to the shipyardâs history. âThe top-secret Pentagon project produced the fastest, safest and most advanced vessel ever constructed.â

The Caterham is probably 20% safer in a crash but neither of them is going to be especially safe.
