That dentist reminds me of Mary Smith, a character in one of Mike Leigh’s films, Another Year. Mary always seemed depressed and lonely. I vaguely recall that she intimated that her life would be different – better – if she bought a new car for herself. It didn’t work. Leigh’s voice-over comments during the film seemed to point to Mary’s inability to connect with people (perhaps lack of social skills?). Leigh left it there for viewers to ponder.
