Thread. And a good portion of the replies:
“You can’t have endometriosis, you’re not pretty enough.”
Oh, Charlie knew human nature oh-so-well when he said, “No sense makes sense.”
In Judaism the man has to please the woman sexually because God gave the commandment to MEN to be fruitful and multiply so it’s on them to make a lady want to do the deed.
Just out of curiosity, where does it say that? I want to know because recently I did some reading on Lilith and her role in Judaism as a predecessor of Eve.
Also, from “Linda Goodman’s Love Signs”, wherein she talk about the “Co-Creators”, starting just above the highlighted section at the bottom of page 16 and continuing on to page 17:
The following quotation is from a painstaking translation of the Septuagint, the earliest known (circa 250 B.C.) version of the Old Testament (our standard Hebrew MSS date only from the Renaissance).
Huh?
First, that doesn’t align with my understanding of the Masoretic Text, which seems considerably older than the Renaissance, if not nearly as old as the Septuagint.
Second, she is awfully selective in the verses that she omits from that Biblical quote. Here’s the entirety of Proverbs 8 (LITV). Note especially how it begins.
Does not wisdom call? And does not understanding speak?
She stands in the top of high places, by the wayside, in the houses of the paths,
beside the gates; before the entrance of the city, at the doors, she cries.
“I call to you, O men, and my voice is to the sons of men.
Understand wisdom, simple ones; and fools, be of an understanding heart.
Hear, for I will speak of excellent things, and from the opening of my lips shall be right things.
For my mouth shall speak of truth, and wickedness is hateful to my lips.
All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; nothing crooked or perverse is in them;
they are all plain to the understanding one; and right to those who find knowledge.
Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge, rather than choice gold.
For wisdom is better than jewels, and all delights cannot be compared to it.
I, wisdom, dwell with sense, and I find knowledge of discretions.
The fear of Jehovah is to hate evil; I hate pride and loftiness, and the evil way, and the perverse mouth.
Counsel and sound wisdom are mine; I am understanding; I have strength.
By me kings reign, and princes decree righteousness.
Rulers and nobles rule by me, and all the judges of the earth.
I love those who love me, and those who seek me early find me.
Riches and honor are with me; enduring wealth and righteousness.
My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my increase is better than the best silver.
I walk in the path of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of justice;
to cause those who love me to inherit wealth, and I will fill up their treasuries.
Jehovah possessed me in the beginning of His way, from then, before His works.
I was set up from everlasting, from that which was before the earth.
When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no springs heavy with water.
Before the mountains were settled, before the hills, I was brought forth;
before He had made the earth and the fields, or the highest part of the dust of the world.
When He prepared the heavens, I was there; when He set a circle on the face of the deep,
when He set the clouds above, when He made the strong fountains of the deep,
when He gave to the sea its limit, that the waters should not beyond His command; when He decreed the foundations of the earth,
then I was at His side, like a master workman; and I was His delights day by day, rejoicing before Him at every time;
rejoicing in the world, His earth; and my delight was with the sons of men.
And now listen to me, O sons, for blessed are those who keep my ways.
Hear instruction, and be wise, and do not refuse it.
Blessed is the man listening to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.
For whoever finds me finds life, and he shall obtain favor from Jehovah.
But he who sins against me does violence to his own soul; all who hate me love death.”
Now, that could be read to be talking about a co-Creator deity whose domain is wisdom and understanding, but, especially if you don’t omit Proverbs 8:1-2, it sounds an awful lot like the writer is anthropomorphizing wisdom and understanding for the purposes of poetry, and saying that those traits were with God during the creation of the Earth.
The fact that the author chooses to omit every instance where the speaker is identified (and, in fact, every mention of wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and similar concepts) seems to indicate a deliberate omission of that context for the sake of strengthening her argument.
Yep, probably. I don’t know if people still speak to her like they do Edgar Cayce.
Will read right after I state that I don’t like the sound of “given certain conditions”, lol.
TLDR: marriage
Yeah, my dad calling me “sexy” when I was 12 because I wore flared slacks with embroidery on the flares and a pair of Mickey Mouse (no, seriously, they had the gold-plated Mickey emblem on them, I don’t mean “low quality”, lol) patent-leather Mary Janes. No, he couldn’t’ve said, “Dear, you look nice.”
Thus fucking up my perception of how I myself should be perceived by men in order to be accepted by them, all in one fell swoop and no one even, EVEN, being aware of that fact. Not until recently, that is. And I’m trying hard not to let it burn me that DAMMIT, he must’ve known it was inappropriate and why the fuck didn’t my mom say something - she was sitting right there! Argh.
It is a true wonder that I didn’t become some murderous misandrist.

Welp, I was getting tired of “Singing in the Rain” anyhow. The line in the lyric that grabbed me is “And you’re over sweet sixteen!” Like that’s still not a minor?! Plus just the general exploitation of the females; now, it’s not just looks that count, but sound and if you don’t sound like a certain thing…
Have we gotten anywhere since 1953?
Sixteen used to be the bottom end of no longer creepy.
Not that a sixteen year old girl had more rights than now, of course.
16 was also a common age for “coming out” into society in British-heritage cultures.
Now, what about “I Saw Her Standing There”? Is that okay only if it’s sung by someone under the age of, say, 25? Paul wasn’t much more than 20 years old when he wrote the lyrics.
And “Daddy Long-Legs” - ugh, that always creeped me out. Same with “Gigi” - ZOMG, let’s promote classy servitude, among other things! Also, I promise not to get started on “My Fair Lady”. As long as these films are promoted as classics and “must-sees”, the patriarchy will live on in them.
Which brings me to the concept of the “salon”. What’s that all about? Was it a liberation for women, or just ruffly, intellectual patriarchy?
I think that depended on which one you went to, same as today. I’ve been to feminist discussion groups which were awesome, and I’ve been to feminist discussion groups run by clueless upper-middle-class twits who couldn’t spot a point of intersectionality if they tripped over it (and that’s despite some of them being visible minorities).

I love Pre-Code Hollywood films for stuff like this!
P.S.: Now, this is a MUST-SEE, for sure. Trust me on this one, folks. If you’ve not already seen it, please do so.
If you really wanna be squicked out, look no further than the Girl From Ipanema; it’s about two old dudes sitting on a beach in Rio, lusting after (a rightfully ‘unattainable’) 17 year old girl.
But at least the song itself does acknowledge that she’s a girl, not an “underage woman.”
What kills me is that Billy Wilder’s films are celebrated and revered, even though his females are either sexy and stupid, misandrist molls, or nutty hags. I’ve not seen all his movies, but I’ve seen enough to see those things. And even if he did make a film with a woman who wasn’t any of those things, you’d think I’d’ve noticed it, lol.
I wonder if the fact that Wilder, even though he was educated, urbane, and witty, was also short and not considered physically attractive, has anything to do with it. Just a thought.
I remember thinking about this when I watched Wild. I wasn’t freaked out when they showed Reese Witherspoon hiking alone in the middle of nowhere, but every time she met one or more men in the trail I’d have an “oh no” moment (which if you’ve seen the film is unfounded about 80% of the time).
