O, Canada - all your canuck news worth sharing!

I was saying to a friend whose husband is a staunch Conservative and who’s in mourning now (“The world is going to end!”), that the Conservatives are no longer the Conservatives of Diefenbaker, Stanfield and Joe Clark, all of whom were honourable men who had the best interests of the nation at heart. In fact, I think that Carney, even though he’s a Liberal, has more in common with old school Conservatives than most modern Liberal leaders.

He’s a banker, ffs! It doesn’t get more conservative than that!

They are very concerned with Trump. The rest of Canada thinks that it would be very amusing to see Trump try to deal with Quebec.

Exactly. Old school banker at that

Yes, that’s one of the topics today - BQ is super worried about the US as tariffs are expected to hit that province especially hard. Strange bedfellows for this go around, indeed.

The Quebecois are famously irascible about their unique place and culture within Canada as a primarily Francophone province. PsiPhiGirl can probably give a viewpoint from within the province. French is the first official language and there is no budging from that.

There has been a movement for years to secede from Canada, and they’ve even had a terrorist organization kill people; what amounts to martial law was briefly enforced until they were tracked down. There have been referendums in the province to secede, which so far haven’t worked. At the last referendum, in true Canadian form, instead of guns and a civil war, bus loads of Canadians from other provinces descended on Quebec to say “We love you so! Please don’t go!” (Where the Wild Things Are quote), and they decided to stay. For now.

It’s kind of hard to explain to a non-Canadian why it’s funny, but think of the reputation that French waiters have towards tourists, and ramp that up by several million people.

To be fair, a lot of Acadians died when the Brits decided they wanted Canada instead. And the Brits were even worse to Native populations. The distrust and animosity didn’t show up out of nowhere.

No argument there!

It looks like King Charles will be coming to Canada and giving the Throne Speech when Parliament reconvenes. This hasn’t happened in a very, very long time; usually it’s the monarch’s representative, the Governor-General who does the Throne Speech.

This is sending a clear message to Krasnov; “Canada is Ours, and you may not have it”.

Is it though? That feels like it’s the sort of thing that traditionally would count as a clear message, but being sent to someone who barely understands words spoken openly to his face.

True; he doesn’t understand subtlety. Although he has a certain awe of the royals, so this may improve Carney’s cred, as the video says.

Oh man, don’t make me root for Charles.

The entire idea was stupid and thank goodness that at least some people (the world outside) are seeing what happens if you elect a fascist moron to lead.

I stumbled onto a right-wing youtuber yesterday, and caught the beginnings of how Trump is going school that moron and fraud Carney during their meeting. It’s a different world over there.
