The National Review is a poor shell of what it was before William F Buckley Jr. died. Lowry is no WFB Jr., even in his dreams. It’s gone very Trumpish, which WFB would have hated.
That seems like forever ago.
I do miss rational discourse from conservatives, even as much as I disagree with most of them.
Oh my dear, yes!
Okay, let’s hope that this time, SOMEthing hits the damned wall and sticks to him so he can be put in prison finally.
The judge wrote, “Trump complains that CNN described his election challenges as ‘the Big Lie.’ Trump argues that ‘the Big Lie’ is a phrase attributed to Joseph Goebbels and that CNN’s use of the phrase wrongly links Trump with the Hitler regime in the public eye. This is a stacking of inferences that cannot support a finding of falsehood.”
Prosecutors asked U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan to issue a protective order in the case a day after Trump pleaded not guilty to charges of trying to overturn his 2020 election loss and block the peaceful transition of power. The order — which is different from a so-called “gag order” — would limit what information Trump and his legal team could share publicly about the case brought by special counsel Jack Smith.
Such protective orders are common in criminal cases, but prosecutors said it’s “particularly important in this case” because Trump has posted on social media about “witnesses, judges, attorneys, and others associated with legal matters pending against him.”
Interesting how Godwin’s law has to modified in this topic: 1) Hitler doesn’t even have to be mentioned; 2) the parallel is not just hyperbole; 3) it definitely didn’t start at the end of the discussion; and 4) for that matter, it didn’t end the discussion–the dialog just goes on and on and on . . . .
His whole raison d’etre is to cause problems. Honestly, I think microdosing his Diet Coke would do a world of good for him.
Putting this here because it doesn’t quite fit in the US Reps Follies thread. Also, this makes me wish Chris Farley hadn’t been quite so keen on imitating John Belushi right down to his cause of death; can you imagine him on SNL doing Christie? And he’d be the right age; Christie is 60 and Farley would’ve turned 59 this past February.
Technically, Godwin’s Law doesn’t say anything about ending the conversation. Just that, eventually, someone will bring up Nazis.
But…
First, let me get this Donald Trump issue out of the way: If you’re thoughtful about it and show some real awareness of history, go ahead and refer to Hitler or Nazis when you talk about Trump. Or any other politician.
Watching this now… very helpful!
They think Pence will be the best witness for the prosecution! How dumb can they possibly be?
But I always appreciate how the Guardian will end with factual information to put things in context, instead of just repeating the lies.
Edit:
I think he’s daring them to arrest him for contempt at this point.
