The name of handmaids in “The Handmaid’s Tale” refers to their ownership by a man, so June is not June but rather Offred (of Fred).
This will make much more sense if you read the book or watch the TV show. Which, really, you should be doing anyway, to understand a lot of what’s happening in the U.S.
