I wonder how much CO2 is released from a cremation? Soylent green sounds much more . . . green. Maybe that’s where the name came from?
Some trees are really, really small…
But then again this is touted as a “quantum leap” - a tiny, abrupt transition between two values of a physical quantity in the atomic range. Which sort of happens at random and in most cases isn’t associated with a qualitative change in the system.
Yes, by saying ‘as much CO2 as a tree’ it may mean ‘this specific tree over here that has lived its whole life in the shade and being pissed on by dogs’
Non-human animals, of course, are not the only beings with an ambiguous sentience stature that poses complicated questions. Birch discusses people with disorders of consciousness, embryos and fetuses, neural organoids (brain tissue grown in a dish), and even “AI technologies that reproduce brain functions and/or mimic human behavior,” all of which share the unenviable position of being perched on the edge of sentience—a place where it is excruciatingly unclear whether or not these individuals are capable of conscious experience.
Wow. Way out of my depth here…
It’s so much harder to understand this from a capitalistic, how-can-I-exploit-this mindset. Which is why this is not going to be promoted for at least the next 4 years.
But yes, if you see humans as part of a living whole organism, the path forward is very different.
McAfee shared documents arguing that bird flu-contaminated raw milk does not pose a risk. One document was said to contain responses from “ChatGBT” that suggested that bioactive components of raw milk could inactivate influenza viruses. However, the chatbot responses also noted that “inactivation of flu viruses in raw milk specifically hasn’t been extensively studied” and raw milk “carries a risk of bacterial contamination.”
Oh, there’s disease in my product? But look, this AI hallucinated proof that it’s not a problem!
According to the document, anti-vaccine advocate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr, whom Trump has picked to be the US health secretary, is a Raw Farm customer. (Kennedy has previously stated he is a raw milk drinker.) Further, Raw Farm says that McAfee “has been asked by the RFK transition team to apply for the position of ‘FDA advisor on Raw Milk Policy and Standards Development.’”
“With RFK being appointed to head the [Department of Health and Human Services] … it is certain that decades old FDA anti-raw-milk policies will shift soon,” the Raw Farm document reads.
Aaaaand we’re doomed.
And, as that effect finally waned, along came covid. Or PFOS. Or microplastics. We really have created a world unsuited to ourselves.
All so a few white dudes can become enormously wealthy…
I don’t think that would work in a small apartment.
Fascinating for orange cats, but what about purple ones?
The secret to our cat’s orange colour (well, more of a blonde) was getting skunked.
Not so much the spray itself, but the peroxide we used in cleaning her up.
Poor beast went from tasteful gray to bottle blonde for the best part of a year.
Happening right now, started yesterday - Three flat earthers, and a bunch of flat earth debunkers, currently in Antarctica proving that the sun stays up 24 hours a day in the Antarctic summer. The flat earthers seem pretty dejected by being immediately subjected to something that should be entirely impossible in their worldview, but are already moving the goalposts (as is the rest of the flat earth community, who have been alternately floating conspiracy theories about the ones who agreed to go, and attempts to explain it away)
The party also includes Candace Owens’ producer, who is a flat earther (Owens herself has claimed not to know which is accurate while calling science in general a “cult”).
Ridiculous that this is something that needs arguing, but such is the world we’re in.
Has some links to actual studies.
