Possibly untrue science news

you’ve seen this series, have you not?

Looks like a cool series. I’m more of an old-school reading fan, though; I have a collection of magazines and books on similar subjects. I’ve struggled to make the transition to learning stuff by video. One of the magazines (Model Railroader) has really gotten into on-line stuff, which I haven’t really taken advantage of. Somehow, for me, computer <> models. Unless it’s 3D printing or signs or whatnot.

But I am intrigued by Luke Towan’s series. Thanks.

Ever seen a sand mandala made and destroyed? It is a beautiful experience.

I didn’t know about it. I did a search and watched this video:

Pretty cool. I see what you mean!

The monks who do them are wonderful. They are just really relaxed and live in a whole other pace of time, are just the sweetest people. I enjoyed hanging out with them - they came to Wilmington, NC when I lived there. My daughter was young and loved watching the piece develop - and nearly cried when they threw it into the water. Really it is a beautiful experience to be a part of it.

If we could just get U.S.-based orgs to realize the same thing…

I hope some other news outlets follow their lead. I’m not holding my breath.

Now if we can get them to do the same with other science “controversies” that are settled science.

Highlighting the perpetual problem of science: maintenance. Little funding for collections. Little funding to maintain useful software. To keep helpful field and specialty short/summer courses going. Everyone has time for novelty. We need to reward maintenance and scaling.

I can’t help thinking of the taliban bombing statues and it scares me.

You don’t have to drop bombs if everything is already dead and rotted.

I don’t know whether this is a science thing or “the government is going after scientists” thing. Either way it sounds messed up.

Fuck. Need to block Gizmodo again, had done that in Firefox but not Waterfox. Strobe lights are fucking dangerous!

P.S. Looking up “gizmodo strobe” to find more about the bug, and possible solutions, GIZMODO ENCOURAGES PEOPLE TO BUY OR BUILD STROBE LIGHTS.

No strobing in Android Chrome. None.

I did that Google. Looks like they report on it, but given their beat that makes sense.

Tried it in Windows Chrome (to check it without any ad blocking)… obnoxiously large banner at the top, but it at least wasn’t animated. Don’t even see that in Firefox with adblock. Closest thing I see to a strobe is the auto-rotating “you may also like” set of three stories, but it’s almost 10 seconds between changes…

Left side, about 20 flashes per second.

I’d previously reported the bug here:

This just in: Introverts don’t actually like spending time alone*!

*When “spending time alone” is defined as “sit[ting] alone, by themselves, without any device or activity,” for fifteen minutes at a time.
