Came here to post this, but saw the news about Cecile Richards and now I’m really bummed. So in other news, the guitarist for Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake died.
Ah, Rembrandt/Gene Deitch! They made Tom and Jerry cartoons in the early 60s (e.g. “Dickey Moe,” “Tall in the Trap”) – they get a bad rap, but I always loved 'em.
Those are my favorite Tom and Jerry cartoons!
I wonder why. I loved those crazy cartoons.
“The Zoot Cat” is a scream! Perhaps their best.
I noticed that too a few days ago when I went there to order their 4K releases for Yojimbo/Sanjuro; Punch-Drunk Love; and Ugetsu. While there, I zapped them my desire to see them FINALLY release 4Ks for Eraserhead , The Elephant Man , and Inland Empire. All of them had already been 4K scanned and under Lynch’s direction, no less.
BTW: There is a 4K region-free release of The Straight Story – but released by StudioCanal.
Carlisle United don’t have an official hall of fame, but if they did Alan Shoulder would be in it

One of my goals is to read everything Solnit wrote before I die.
She delivers the truth. Reliably.
Thanks for posting the lengthier excerpt as well.
Spot-on.
I was never at home with Lynch’s “art” for precisely all these reasons in your post.
The reason I don’t often mention this unease I have merely points at the whole dang problem: I often don’t feel safe saying it. Among my various arty and film-nerd friends, none of the cishet men in that group dislike Lynch or his works. None of them willingly discuss manifestations of [the] patriarchy. When I do voice my issues about him and his “art,” the typical reaction from these friends is that I just don’t Get It.
Well, Solnit does.
And so articulately.
What a messenger.
You’re welcome, and yes, I too have been disappointed by fanbois who refuse to see that problem in his movies-- Lynch’s “phallocentrism,” as I used to hear the problem called. I can still appreciate many of his films, but not feeling “at home” with them is a great way to put the undercurrent caused by this problem.
And Solnit, yes, one of my guiding lights. Not only the several of her many books that I’ve managed to read, but (and yes, FB is evil, etc.) also her many helpful and bolstering FBook posts. FYI, she just started a newsletter too:
