RIP. We'll miss you

Ah. And just a few days ago I posted a clip of his on Weird Odd Stuff.

He was giving the scene far more than it deserved.

I feel he held himself back by working under the name “Wings.”

Further proof that Death fears no one.

Ok, but humility? He had 5 sons. He named all of them George Edward Foreman, which is also his name. He even named one of his daughters Georgetta. I liked him, but humble is not an adjective I would use to describe him.

Per George in People magazine: George Foreman, the legendary boxer, named all five of his sons George Edward Foreman to create a strong sense of unity among them. He once explained that this way, they would always have something in common, saying, “If one of us goes up, then we all go up together. And if one goes down, we all go down together.” He also humorously mentioned that after taking so many punches in his boxing career, it was easier to remember just one name for all his sons. To avoid confusion, each son has a unique nickname, such as George Jr., Monk, Big Wheel, Red, and Little Joey

…And one of them Oliver Boliver Butt
And one of them Zanzibar Buck Buck Mc Fate…

Yes, but he still named them after himself. That’s ego, not humility.

Not necessarily? Creating unity is actually the very opposite.

Anyway, even if he did lack humility, it doesn’t sound like something to blame a boxer for. There’s a sport where you especially need to believe in yourself! And maybe what egotism he did have or display were overshadowed by Ali’s declarations that he was “the greatest.” :woman_shrugging:

Arguably a statement of fact.

No I liked Foreman. The “humility” part just made me raise an eyebrow. I’ll take bravado over false humility, which is way too common among famous people.

Oh, sad news!

Agreed. And no one could have known him better than his apparently tight-knit family. If they said that his life was marked by humility, then who am I to counter that? All I can do is express an opinion based on what little I’ve picked up of his life after his boxing career ended, and on the full statement below. Within “creating unity”, the naming, I believe, was meant to give his children a leg-up in the world, something to help carry them along and continue after he was gone, something to inspire pride in oneself, success, and personal growth.

The Foreman family’s statement: Our hearts are broken. With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr. who peacefully departed on March 21, 2025 surrounded by loved ones. A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand and great grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose.

A humanitarian, an Olympian, and two time heavyweight champion of the world, He was deeply respected — a force for good, a man of discipline, conviction, and a protector of his legacy, fighting tirelessly to preserve his good name— for his family.

We are grateful for the outpouring of love and prayers, and kindly ask for privacy as we honor the extraordinary life of a man we were blessed to call our own.
