She was a legend!
Oh, man. I was just watching some episodes of the International Animation Festival series she hosted in the mid-1970s the other day.
Iām sure she had some performances that werenāt amazing over her career, but I honestly canāt think of any at the moment.
I was just watching her in Willow last week after Val Kilmer died.
Farewell to the Last Writer of the Latin American Boom
The Peruvian author Mario Vargas Llosa was the worldās savviest and most accomplished political novelist.
Dude made both threads.
I guess heāll always be a bit of a controversial figure.
On one hand, heās an accomplished writer. On the other hand, he was a bit of a shitty person.
On someoneās* recommendation, I read both King Leopoldās Ghost & Vargas Llosaās Dream of the Celt, back-to-back, 8 or 10 years ago. The former, in particular, is a very difficult read, but Iād place both books under the āmust readā column. I was wholly unfamiliar with Vargas Llosa when I read his book and, upon learning about him, was utterly perplexed that he could have written it.
*Probably came from the Miles Davis email list, before its membership fractured.
He was more famous for being part of the Wimbledon FA Cup winning squad, although he was injured for the final.
When the weather was particularly, nastily cold or hot, mom would re-enter the house saying, āIt sipple out deh!ā Were it icy, āMek mi slide out deh!ā was added.
Sipple means ādangerous.ā The line features so prominently in the song due to the bullets Scratch, Max, and The Upsetters were dodging as they entered the Black Ark studio. Everyone made it inside okay, and either Scratch or Max almost breathlessly exclaimed, āIt sipple out deh!ā The song was written and recorded w/in a couple days.
Most of the footage was taken from Rockers, a wonderful film I most ahem highly recommend. Get it with subtitles!
{Iād heard of Rockers thru my reading, and we ordered a copy. It ironically arrived a few hours after mom left for Jamaica, and I began watching it that evening. Iād got about halfway thru when my BF arrived, and I started it over, knowing heād love it, too. Weād got maybe 1/4 of the way thru when K came over, so we started it over for him. Weād just finished it when our pal J showed up, and we started it again, knowing heād also love it. K happily stuck around to see it a second time.}
My boss at the Upland German Deli, āTanteā Inge, always had the radio set on a Hollywood station which played very moldy oldies. The station had a German show on Saturdays, so I guess she wanted to support them the rest of the week, too.
Wink Martindale was one of their DJs, and I was surprised by how delighted I was to hear him. I hadnāt even been a big fan, but had watched some of āhisā game shows during childhood. This news makes me sadder than expected, too.
Gary Owens was also one of their DJs, and I was thrilled to hear him. Iād been a fan of his at least since Laugh-In.
