His grandfather was John Tyler.
" The chemical engineer helped preserve his familyâs legacy."
How did that pass muster at NPR? It sounds like Tyler used his engineering skills to embalm something belonging to the family.
Oh my gosh. Yeah, thatâs how names work, isnât it? Itâs been a long week. Tylerâs b-day was in 1790
Greatest interplay between her and Frank Burns, the crew cynically throwing him a party:
- Margaret: They love you, Frank!
- Frank Burns: It was their hatred that fooled me.
Sad. Iâm reminded of how her character on M*A*S*H had one of the most incredible character arcs of anybody in the showâs long run.
The early seasons were defined by her codependent and toxic relationship with Frank Burns as his mistress/sidekick (as well as being a foil to the 4077âs hijinks). As the show evolved from lighthearted slapstick to more drama/dark comedy, she became a wholly fleshed out, respected, and sympathetic character.
Also sad to realize there arenât that many people from that outstanding show that are still around.
An early hint of her characterâs impending turnaround may have been revealed in the episode where she and Hawkeye were trapped close together in a raging storm, with that driving them to make wild passionate love. Afterwards, same episode, she envisioned the beginning of a serious relationship between the two. Hawkeye didnât see it that way. At the end they came to a mutual understanding, one that promised a more complicated relationship between the two. I still think that was her best acting on the show.
That episode was heavy duty.
It certainly took a side-trip from the usual episode. I wonder if Alda and/or Swit suggested the plot to the writers. Playing mortal enemies can get boring.
Itâs long been my understanding that Swit herself was responsible for the evolution of her character as the series went on and the principal actors got more invested in their charactersâ writing and development.
Another actress whose name you might not recognize but she was in tons of stuff from the 70s to recently.
I loved her Seinfeld character.
I didnât remember (well, among many other places) she was from Austin.
Major Houlihan, a strict disciplinarian, was the butt of sexist jokes from the surgeons and other men in the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital unit, particularly âHawkeyeâ Pierce (played by Alan Alda). Swit â who had the only leading female role in the show â took a stand before the fifth series began. She was then allowed to contribute to her characterâs development, making Houlihan more three-dimensional, warm and brave. âI am a feminist, from the top of my head to the bottom of my toenail, and I favour playing strong women,â she told the American magazine Closer Weekly in 2022.
From then on, Switâs character was referred to mainly by her real name rather than as âHot Lipsâ and a more human side emerged when Houlihan broke down in front of her nurses, confessing she was hurt by the disdain they held for her because of her stern manner.
Iâm glad she was able to fight back against the BS and that they listened instead of replacing her.
