Egads! Itā€™s the entire Mary Kay sales force!

This is OT, but Mary Kay reminds me of a story you may not believe. In grad school I had a really smart undergrad assistant in chem engineering from Iran. After graduation he joined the US Air Force as a private, to get his citizenship. For a while after basic, he sold Mary Kay. That is, till his superiors told him to knock it off.

He became a personal injury lawyer. I donā€™t know what to make of that.

Whatā€™s so unbelievable about being an Iranian-American chemical-engineer fighter-jockey makeup-salesman ambulance-chaser?

Thatā€™s, like, the American Dream, distilled to four careers.

Itā€™s a good example of how social norms dictate what is considered ā€œmasculineā€ or ā€œfeminineā€, rather than science.

Since he didnā€™t grow up in the U.S., he didnā€™t know that Real Menā„¢ donā€™t work in direct sales if the product in question happens to be cosmetics (including products for men).

This guy was highly unusual. He parents were diplomats, who got out of Iran when the Shah was deposed. In his high school, there was discrimination towards various groups that was getting out of hand, and he managed to negotiate a solution.

Shouldnā€™t we at least give John McCain a small mention? Sure, his Maverick era has generally sucked, but he did willfully endure some downright evil fuckery in Vietnam, despite volunteering to go there.

Plenty of airmen came back and didnā€™t obsess about their role in war by wanting to keep the bombs falling.

I assume youā€™re talking about his position on trying to bring the Iraq war to conclusion (I think a somewhat ā€œIf weā€™re in it, we need to fish or cut baitā€ position)?

He deserves at least minimum credit for some of his work, which generally seems to be mixed bag of kinda good and not so good. Iā€™m not sure Iā€™d lump him in with our history of government supervillians, though.
He was always quick to apologize for mistakes, against misuse of government finances, in support of Native American casinos, seemingly very supportive of rights for prisoners of war, and definitely worked toward repairing relations with Vietnam, which in my opinion, is incredible after knowing what he endured as a prisoner.

I see your position, but I donā€™t know if Iā€™d put him as high on the list of baddies as Rumsfeld, Cheney, McConnell, or the like.
Iā€™m not praising him across the board. Just feeling he deserves a minimum of credit.

Iā€™m talking about the Iran thing and about how him being a maverick was about showing his displeasure that he never got his way about which wars to start.

Oh, thatā€™s terrible news! So sad to hear it. The Bad Seeds are one of the most underrated bands around, I think.

Awww, man, I feel surprisingly nostalgic and sad about this one. He was such a part of my childhood.

Didnā€™t normally agree with her politics (i.e., nationalist), but she accomplished some very good legislation as well.
