The temple I’m in has always been super duper careful for many years not to endorse any particular candidate, even though we are almost all a bunch of lefty queers and it’d be redundant anyhow.
It would be fun to see an official “Fuck Trump” statement now, but… the selective enforcement thing is all too likely.
That could backfire on them. Yes, the big mega-churches love Trump, but lots of other churches do not, and will not preach for their members to support right wing causes. They will instead preach what Jesus actually said, and will ask their members to support progressive candidates and causes. The far right thinks all churches are on their side, but that’s just not the case.
What are they going to do? Blow up the churches? They showed us that they can’t destroy all the churches during civil rights, when the Black church was the center of organizing.
Maybe. Where I live, there are tons of churches in every community. Hell, there are 2 within a couple of miles of me, and I live in a sort of heading into a ruralish area.
The UCC is pretty progressive, as is the UUA. Both are large enough that I could see them making an endorsement. Of course, they are also both strong enough believers in the separation of church and state that they will more likely stand on principle and not do that.
That’s the thing, while this will likely make things worse, let’s not pretend this hasn’t been happening with a wink wink for our entire history. Let’s see, if the pastor is preaching against abortion, gay rights and women’s rights, gee which candidate could they be endorsing, hmmm what a mystery.
But also, how is this in the service of justice at all… If this is found to be unconstitutional later, HOW IN THE FUCK DOES IT MAKE SENSE TO LET HIM KEEP DOING IT???
Congress and SCOTUS have all but formally abdicated their responsibilities in our “checks and balances” system. I don’t like sounding like a Debbie Downer, but I’m seriously starting to wonder how we can get things back on track, even if we do manage to win elections in 2026 and 2028.
Depends on how big the win is. Safe majority in the House and 67 in the Senate would be the cleanest. Just keep impeaching until you get to a non-fascist.
That’s pretty unlikely, though, even with the unpopularity of the current piles of shit. So let’s say majority in either chamber. Nothing gets done for 2 years. Blocking power but no repairs and no progress. Then 2028, and we need at least both chambers and the White House.
First order of business is taking out the SCOTUS trash. Without impeachment numbers, that means expansion. Turn 6-3 into 9-6. Anything else is pointless, because SCOTUS will just overturn everything positive.
Voter’s rights next, including automatic voter registration and vote-by-mail, along with DC and PR statehood. Solidify the beachhead of democracy.
In parallel with progressive policies and fixing all the damage T**** will have done by then, it’s time to get down to punishing the fascists. Everyone from the T**** administration needs to see prison time and not a few GOP members of congress along with them. There needs to be a message that fascists die in prison in order to make the next shitheads think twice.
I don’t know why I see so much opposition to this. 1 person per district makes sense, logically, and there isn’t any reason why it can’t be expanded. The only argument I see against it is the same one I see for so many: “well, when the GOP is in power, they will just do it”. Yes, we know. And they did and do. But right now, tomorrow is really really far away and we’re trying to just get to the next minute.
I like Justice Jackson’s opinions. As I said above somewhere, she’s not writing through the lens of legal arcana, but through common sense and plain English. I’m finding myself hoping she’s named Chief Justice someday. Let’s hope we get a Democrat in the White House in 2028, and keep one there for a long time.
