Ice on the Mississippi River this afternoon.

It looks like it must be moving downriver, doesn’t it? It’s not, though. It’s all frozen in place.

Those were part of the Wir können alles. Außer Hochdeutsch.1) marketing thingy of Baden-Württemberg that ran from 1999-2021.

Which was quite effective; the slogan became something of a byword. It also sparked a lot of parodies, was used to criticize things that didn’t work well, was poached for other marketing campaigns2), and had a bit of pushback from the parts of Baden-Württemberg that are not Swabia.3),4)

The current slogan is Baden-Württemberg ist „THE LÄND“.5),6)

Yeah, I agree, something does seem a bit “off” about that… It took me until just now to realize what—for Vermont, it should be curry with a touch of apple and maple syrup.

And that’s why there are no badgers in Australia.

St. Patrick kicked all the snakes out of Ireland, which is why we still have badgers. The logic is perfect.

History
Creating a Curry Kids Love
Curry was originally a spicy dish that was only suitable for adult tastes, but House Foods wanted to create a version that grownups could enjoy together with children. The result was House Vermont Curry, a mild roux that preserved the distinctive flavor, aroma, and color of curry, while dialing back the spiciness that make it unsuitable for children. Now whole families could enjoy curry together anytime they wanted!

Why Apples and Honey?
The origin of “Vermont” in Vermont Curry dates back to a book entitled “Folk Medicine: A Vermont Doctor’s Guide to Good Health.” The book sparked a health fad that included drinking a mixture of apple cider vinegar and honey. This eventually found its way to Japan, sparking a health fad there that came to be known as the “Vermont Health System.”

And that’s not all!

Vermont Curry is the number-one selling brand of Japanese curry roux. It was first introduced in 1963, and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013.

I thought the pilsner glasses under Dandy’s were trousers. My first thought was, “Yeah, I’ve been drunk, but at least I’ve never needed pants services.” Go me?
