That is a movie-length talk about a movie that apparently (according to the transcript) never mentions the actual name. Is he talking about the PBS documentary series “The Black Church: This Is Our Story, This Is Our Song”?

It’s a film called Honk For Jesus (he does eventually show the title on the screen, a while in… I think he mentions the name?)…

Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. - Wikipedia.

So far, it’s about the Black church and the shift to the prosperity doctrine. But he does a great job talking about how the Black church (generally speaking) has sort of lost its radicalism because of that shift…

Generally speaking, Bill has some great cultural analysis around Black culture (his video on the films Fences and Moonlight the did this year was really good). He’s also himself religious and talks about his church a good bit on his videos (which is decidedly not a prosperity doctrine church).

I remember her speaking about this on This American Life all those years ago. It stays with you.

She recently reuploaded it to YouTube.

I wish everyone who grew up in a religious family/environment and can’t understand not believing would watch this. She does such a good a job of describing her own journey. There is not a trace of snark or condescension. She is so full of love and wonder and honest thirst for knowledge, it’s just beautiful.
