I think the wrong people learned the wrong shit, that it’s better to let a pandemic kill off “the weak”… And that pandemics can be effectively used as a political strategy to demonize some people over others…

While there will be exemptions for verified chronic illnesses and several other things, Adkins and other district officials said during the meeting that students need to learn reliability and work ethic.
“If you have the sniffles, that is fine,” Adkins said during the meeting. “You are going to have them when you go to work one day. We have all gone to work sick and hurt and beat up.”
In other words, life is just supposed to suck, so you might as well get used to it now. These people seriously do not think anyone should be enjoying life. Not even for a minute. I bet this asshole wants to get rid of recess, too.

My wife worked in Germany for a year (long before COVID), and learned very quickly that if you show up to work sick, the Germans do not appreciate your work ethic. At all. She was politely but firmly asked to please go home now before she infected everyone else. She’s pretty sure they didn’t say out loud things like “fuck off” or “why are we having this conversation with a grown-up?”. But she was pretty sure it was being said with their eyes.

I would certainly encourge my kids to spend their day coughing in the principal’s office. And when I inevitably caught that flu? Great time to schedule a meeting with the superintendent…

I’m sure I won’t remember, but I’d love to do a follow up in a year. I’ll bet both the student absentee rate and the employee absentee rate go up. It’s just such a mind-numbingly stupid decision.

Under the Lawrence County School System’s [new attendance policy](https://www.lcss.us/_files/ugd/105297_b76c459f607143858faffd57285ee540.pdf), doctor’s notes will no longer excuse an absence. Students will now just be marked absent or present.
The policy states that after just three absences, schools will start intervention. If the student misses school for eight or more days, they will be referred to juvenile court.
Director of Schools Michael Adkins addressed the issue during the district’s June school board meeting.
“You can fail the grade,” Adkins said. “You can fail the course. You are going to be petitioned to court. You are not going to participate in graduation, get your driver’s license or permit.”
Adkins also said during the meeting, “We are going to take control of the attendance of our students. You can bring all the doctor’s notes you want, but it is still unexcused.”

The district sent a letter last week to local medical providers asking them to “emphasize the importance of regular school attendance while treating school-aged patients.” The letter went on to say that “medical notes excusing students for two or more days can unintentionally imply the students should remain home even after their health improves.”
If a child goes to school sick and the school nurse sends that child home, Adkins said that will be marked as tardy.

The infuriating thing about Mary Mallon (aka Typhoid Mary) was that other people also had typhoid and were not indefinitely detained like she was. Of course the problem with her was that she made her living by cooking and she was prohibited from doing so, and the state made no efforts to provide her with an alternative job in order for her to make ends meet.

Nope, they just threw her in a sanatorium with no release date in sight… It did not help her case that she was Irish either, as there was still some serious anti-Irish prejudice in society at the time.
