The goddamn Trump Administration

Jeebus, these guys aren’t even ready for amateur hour.

Musk probably told him to do it, panicking that his sales are in free fall…

When the attack comes, they’ll be lining up in uniform in front of the front door to welcome the Russians in and ask them if there’s anything else they want.

Могу ли я лизнуть ваши сапоги, сэр?

Or, to put it another way: This is the attack.

Venmo has an option to import a user’s entire contact list from their phone.

Yes, this is something a user must choose to do

Making venmo transactions private is incredibly basic and easy

It IS a very stupid administration doing stupid things, stupidly. And their stupidity may slow them down or divert them at the margins here and there, and maybe some wheels will come loose, but I doubt any will fall off. Right now, I don’t see their stupidity stopping their rolling, ongoing coup. It is still a coup, whatever adjective is put in front of it - until that adjective is something like ‘failing’, or even better ‘failed’.

They may be stupid to the extent of being in some respects sometimes barely competent - but that in itself won’t stop them succeeding. Their own mis-steps, their actions - stupid, competent or incompetent - won’t on their own make their coup fail. It needs more than that.

I’d say it’s not even a betting matter - she signed her name to an OpEd calling what Israel was doing “genocide.” That appears to the extent of her “activism.” As with the other students being grabbed, her public criticism of Israel alone constitute her supposed “support for Hamas.” In other words, she’s being deported solely for calling a genocide a genocide. She had recently been doxxed and it seems like she was targeted by the same right-wing Zionist group that previously singled out Khalil. (It seems like anyone who gets their special attention gets the Trump administration’s special attention as well.) Also, it’s not clear that when she was grabbed off the street by unknown masked men wearing hoodies and unmarked cars, they even had revoked her visa, yet.

Something about this one now has me convinced that the administration is ramping this up to normalize it, in preparation for doing this against US citizens. (Not that it isn’t just as awful and unlawful against people with visas and green cards.) They’ve absolutely set the stage to grab anyone off the street that they want, at first “on accident” (“Oops, without a warrant or any other due process, we didn’t know they were a citizen, until they were already lost in the bowels of that Salvadorean prison. Too late! Out of our hands!”), then overtly “on purpose.”

It’s not a slippery slope when we’ve already fallen down the mountain.

So the people in charge of national security don’t even understand simple security.

FTA:

There’s always the chance that malware on one of your devices can tap into your messaging

This was my first thought. We know these weren’t gov’t secured phones (because they have Signal on them), so nobody in the group chat could really be sure of the level of the malware on their phone. Unlike you and me, everyone on the group chat (with the possible exception of the Atlantic editor) is absolutely guaranteed to be the target of state-level intelligence agencies. If there’s an opening, they get the special malware.

My guess is that Mike Waltz has used Jeffrey Goldberg for strategic leaks back when he was a Congresscritter. Waltz probably lists him as JG in his phone (to be clever), as opposed to the couch canoodler JD. He probably added JG and then didn’t see JD and added him (again).

Hanlon’s Razor and all that. Dumbass all the way.

Yes, I recognize that. When I wrote that this mess might “get the snowball rolling,” I meant that part of the snowball might also be Dems (and even some Republicans) finally waking up to how dangerous this administration is, and to the fact that yes, what’s going on is a Fascist coup. Here’s hoping a lot more ordinary people pile on too.

I’m convinced that no one in ICE/this administration believed these guys were gang members, the existence of random tattoos was just one of a number of disingenuous pretexts to get rid of asylum seekers.

And make them an example for the rest of immigrants and cheer up the MAGA masses.

Yeah, the whole point of getting rid of asylum seekers is just performative cruelty, so the more cruel the better.

The point of cancelling the enrolment, and therefore the visas, of PhD students is to remove intellectuals and thoughtcriminals from circulation, so they aren’t being televised, they’re just being systematically disappeared.

It’s not just Columbia, and there are more happening than you know of. I’ve seen an alert of a PhD student at the University of Alabama who got disappeared at 5am, and another one at Tufts.

There’s a purge of foreign students going on, and they’re not advertising it, they’re just kicking in doors before dawn.

That’s why they were all nominated.
