In a move that has raised constitutional concerns, Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee unanimously voted down an amendment Wednesday that would have prohibited U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from detaining or deporting American citizens using federal funds.
The amendment, introduced by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), was part of a broader budget bill passed by the House on April 10. It aimed to codify a clear boundary: that ICE cannot target U.S. citizens for immigration enforcement actions (a protection many might assume already exists).
According to Jayapal, the need for the amendment has grown urgent under President Donald Trump’s second term, during which multiple U.S. citizens have reportedly been detained by ICE, some held for weeks or even deported. Jayapal called the practice “unconstitutional, dangerous, and fundamentally wrong,” citing the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of citizenship rights.
Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) described the vote as one of the most disturbing he has witnessed in committee proceedings, saying he and his Democratic colleagues were left “stunned” by the refusal to affirm such a basic protection. …

I always thought the song was a bit of criticism leveled at western Cold War politics, but I was never a Stipeologist so I can’t be sure. I do know that’s how many of us perceived it in real time in 1983 when we first listened to Murmur.
But songs’ meanings (eta: and institutions) can evolve, and I find the support by REM to be good.

Freight Technologies Inc. CEO Javier Selgas said in a Wednesday news release that buying Trump coin would be “an effective way to advocate for fair, balanced and free trade between Mexico and the U.S.”
The release was attached to a filing that same day with the Securities and Exchange Commission explaining why Freight Technologies was issuing bonds. “The company will use the net proceeds from the offering to purchase TRUMP coins,” the company told the SEC.

Australia’s centre-left prime minister, Anthony Albanese, has won a second term with a crushing victory over the opposition, whose rightwing leader, Peter Dutton, failed to brush off comparisons with Donald Trump and ended up losing his own seat.
Albanese’s Labor party scored an unexpectedly comfortable win on Saturday, after a five-week election campaign dominated by the cost of living and global economic uncertainty.
At the turn of the year, Labor was struggling in the polls, but Dutton ran a campaign derided by commentators as one of the worst in Australian political history, and the former police detective struggled to clearly dissociate himself from some Trump-like rhetoric and policies.
Albanese, 62, had pitched himself as a steady hand to guide Australia through a period of global turbulence turbocharged by Trump’s tariff war. He becomes the first Australian prime minister to serve consecutive terms since 2004.
