I am probably being hypersensitive right now, but the fact that both the DC mayor and the Sec of Transportation first extended condolences to American Airlines before mentioning the actual human beings who lost their lives in this is upsetting. Waiting for Il Douche to blame this on “woke” or “DEI” somehow.
Well, he would be justified. There was a brown person, a woman, a brown woman, and a trans person somewhere in DC at the time. /S
Fuck “taking over Canada,” can we all just join them? I would be happily Canadian.
I like his analysis.
I’ve long said that most of this shit started with Reagan and Thatcher - and only now are we really reaping the consequences. The Democrats’ inability to mount a credible, vocal and visible opposition is a mystery. But the US political system does not help. In the UK, at least we always have a Leader of the Opposition in Parliament. Who exactly is leading the Democrat party right now? No wonder there is so little co-ordinated push-back against the incipient fascism of the MAGA GQP.
Standards are an unwarranted interference with the invisible hand of the market. /s
Will the corpse of Leni Reifenstahl be dug up to organize the event?
If he comes to Philly; he’ll get a “warm welcome”.
But he hates Philly & will probably bypass us. Likely saying that the City really didn’t have much to do with the whole thing.
Exactly. Just all of this.
I’m not extremely old (gen X), but I remember that anyone with colored hair or even different looking from the “norm” clothes was automatically an outsider. I remember moving from my CPS school to the burbs and I decided I’d reinvent myself and donned a jean jacket (audible gasp) which made me an outsider.
I also clearly remember several friends who struggled with their sexual identities. And I have a family member who still does, because she was brought up in my era and you just “didn’t talk about that” then.
I’m freaking happy kids are able to say what we were forced to keep inside. Would that have changed how I developed? No, and it doesn’t have to - it’s not always about yourself…other people are not NPCs. I can see how happy my niece is with her wife and how miserable she was with her husband and see in giant glowing neon letters that it’s just better.
It’s not indoctrination. It’s freedom, and that’s why its scary for them. I can see this in my own family. They didn’t have it and they fear that change. The gay niece? I still overhear her parents occasionally mention that they wonder when she will “grow out of it”. I have a trans niece. I haven’t seen her in person in years because they refuse to allow her to attend family parties. But I never, ever, saw her smile in over 15 years but she’s smiling now in images my kids show me. And I’m thrilled for her.
My family would vote for Trump in a second (and several did) if he wasn’t such a colossal jerk to Mexican people. It’s the one and only reason most of them didn’t vote for him.
I’ve been saying for years that the modern GOP started with Eisenhower, with his cozying up to the corporations and the segregationists. And both he and Reagan had that weird charm that makes people forget how slippery they really are. Ike is also the one who let the CIA become the spook factory it is today, rather than a central clearing house of info that Truman intended (poor naïve Harry!). I mean GE gave both of them money and appliances!
I do remember that on “Spitting Image”, Ronnie and Maggie had a thing going. One closing line I remember him saying is, “I love that woman - too bad I’m just screwing her country!”, or something of that nature.
I understand that, very much. Probably similar upbringing, except very WASP. My favorite aunt tried to come out to us in a sort-of round about “can you imagine if you knew someone who was gay” sort of way, to get “I could never look at them the same way again” from my brother, who now has 2 gender-nonconforming kids, and one who he said “felt she had to come out to us as straight.” Things are very different now from how it was in the 70’s/80’s. I think AIDS caused a much more frank discussion publicly of gender nonconformance. I am very glad our kids now don’t have to hide who they are now. My family covers the entirety (well, most of it anyway) of what my trans young’un refers to as the “alphabet mafia.” It’s much better than it was, and goddam it we are not going back, no matter how much it makes the fascists go ewww. Fuck them and the orange clown they rode in on.
All the carved faces will likely collapse. They already have to put some effort into stabilizing it.
Actually, that might be an argument for.
This is what? Four now? And they’ve been out for less than 2 weeks.
It’s almost like they weren’t the best people to start with.
Isn’t Mt. Rushmore considered sacred by the local First Nations, and the carvings are a desecration?
