I have permanently retired “surely that could not happen here” from my vocabulary. Yes, it would hurt a hell of a lot of people, but would hurt poor and minority folk worst, which is all it takes to get stuff passed anymore. I don’t know, and am seriously afraid to find out. Canada would still partner with European nations in NATO, so I don’t think it’s the end of NATO, but it could mean a restructuring, and maybe it could include nations not in the North Atlantic region, like Australia, for example. Maybe renaming it.
There has been a movement by British commonwealth and former commonwealth nations to form an economic union called “CANZUK”; Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the U.K.
