Stocks have sold off, now bonds (so the market is expecting higher rates) but look at the EUR and even the CAD is rising. Last week the money was “rotating” out of stocks and into bonds. This week, money is just plain leaving the
, or “risk off
” as one might say.
He just granted the big 3 a month exemption from tariffs.
He said so it won’t put them at a disadvantage.
Huh? Disadvantage? I thought tariffs were no problem because the offending country paid it.
“Reciprocal tariffs will still go into effect on April 2. But at the request of the companies associated with USMCA, the president is giving them an exemption for one month so they’re not at an economic disadvantage.”
And then there’s this…
Justin Trudeau, of Canada, called me to ask what could be done about Tariffs. I told him that many people have died from Fentanyl that came through the Borders of Canada and Mexico, and nothing has convinced me that it has stopped. He said that it’s gotten better, but I said, “That’s not good enough.” The call ended in a “somewhat” friendly manner! He was unable to tell me when the Canadian Election is taking place, which made me curious, like, what’s going on here? I then realized he is trying to use this issue to stay in power. Good luck Justin!
This week’s Private Eye. (I hate to scan and post their copyright material here, but they do not publish online and I hope Ian Hislop would sympathise with my wanting to share his work with my US friends.)
The last two paras, below, are the most important. (Relating to an earlier post and replies about this state visit.) Charles had no issue with signalling his support for Zelensky and baiting Trump, who will have to suck it up given a state visit is in the offing.
(For those not aware, PE always refers to Charles as ‘Brian’.)
Why do they call him Brian?
Maybe some kind of protocol where they can’t actually name him? Did Elizabeth have a “code name” as well, I wonder?
Just this wikipedia subsection [shrug]:
- Elizabeth II was regularly referred to as “Brenda” and Charles III as “Brian”. Historically, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh was “Keith”, Princess Margaret (Brenda’s younger sister) was “Yvonne”, and Diana, Princess of Wales, was “Cheryl” – a satire on the perceived nature of Royal affairs as a soap opera.[24][25]
I’m so fucking pissed at the Democrats, Al Green excepted, by their response to the SOTU. A combination of cowardice and incompetence. My local reps went with fired federal workers as their guests. One took a VA worker/veteran who lost his job. Except that he got his job back before they went, so it wasn’t even weaksauce criticism. (And even if that hadn’t been the case, that’s fucking weak - the people who are upset that federal workers are losing their jobs are already upset about it. Bringing the workers there doesn’t bring attention to the issue, bother Trump or serve any purpose.)
Democrats have correctly said that Trump is an existential threat - and they’re not acting like it, at all. I don’t know what the best strategy is, but pretending everything is normal sure as fuck isn’t it. I’d prefer they did something of appropriate seriousness, even if it wasn’t the optimal response.
That’s some “90% of people who eat at McDonalds like hamburgers” level selection bias there.
@KathyPartdeux
As someone rather succinctly put it:
So just a joke, then.
So, this is making Trudeau look good… and he’s trying to stop that while throwing him under the bus to get someone more like himself in power in . Does that sound about right? 'Cause just like Ukraine, the victim is not the one trying to use an issue - that’s the bully’s role. DARVO all the way down…
Fun fact: if you grew up hearing the phrase “well, that’s life in a pencil factory”, this is where it originates from. Much more gruesome than the phrase would seem.
Maybe they don’t understand what “politicise” means?
So much for that “First Amendment” thing.
Edit:
Also, “Techdirt,” of all entities, understands what the fucking job is, now:
Add it to the list.
Might as well just tag “the dictionary” to make it easy.
You might think this whiplash-inducing contrast is just standard political hypocrisy. But it’s actually something much more terrifying: it’s part of a calculated strategy to redefine “free speech” as “speech I like” while using government power to punish speech I don’t like. The crazy part isn’t just that he’s doing it — it’s that he’s doing it so blatantly, while the very same backers who claimed they supported him for his views on “free speech” cheer this on.
Yeah, not exactly news if you’ve been paying attention, but certainly worth putting it out there for the ones who need it to be shoved in their faces, so to speak.
Calling a spade a spade is now radical journalism…
What in the actual fuck.
Did not know that! Fucking yikes!
they think it means “attack innocent Republicans for the crime of committing crimes”…
