I was thinking that JD Vance is quickly becoming the most unctuous person in the trumpian orbit. You know how pets begin to resemble their owners? I think we need to watch Vance closely as he becomes more Trumpy-like in physical appearance. What change will appear first?

Marital status. Following Don Jr.'s plantation wedding to whoever, the tabloids will be plastered with quotes from a north Georgian maple porch swing, “JD gave me the best (and only) sex I ever had.” The media will latch onto the scandal every time a new group of people is being rounded up and sent to foreign prisons. After the divorce with Usha is finalized, JD and maple porch swing will marry and be exiled to a remote base in Redwhiteandblueland, until another distraction is required.

He also said the whole Signal thing was a witch hunt.

When pressed if he told CEOs not to raise prices, as reported in the The Wall Street Journal, Trump added, “No, I never said that. I couldn’t care less if they raise prices, because people are going to start buying American-made cars.”

Trump continued, “I couldn’t care less. I hope they raise their prices, because if they do, people are gonna buy American-made cars. We have plenty.”

Asked if he was concerned about car prices going up, Trump said, “No, I couldn’t care less, because if the prices on foreign cars go up, they’re going to buy American cars.”

The president also said the tariffs would be permanent.

“Absolutely, they’re permanent, sure. The world has been ripping off the United States for the last 40 years and more. And all we’re doing is being fair, and frankly, I’m being very generous,” Trump said.

The president on Saturday also said he has “absolutely” had real conversations about annexing Greenland, which is currently a semiautonomous Danish territory.

“We’ll get Greenland. Yeah, 100%,” Trump said.

He added that there’s a “good possibility that we could do it without military force” but that “I don’t take anything off the table.”

Interesting discussion of how current US leaders have fallen into the trap of actually believing longstanding myths and propaganda about their own country, and about how it functions globally.

[The Signal chat] is just one example of the type of conversation that presumably must take place often, that the public isn’t privy to. But just being privy to this one conversation seems to very much bolster the observation many of us made a long time ago, that this new crop of far right leaders in the US seems different from many of those from previous generations, in that they appear not to be using propaganda as a tool to get the public to support their duplicitous policies, but they believe the propaganda themselves.

We in the US live in a society governed by money, which is obvious to any reasonable observer of how things work in the US. But at the same time, we can all hear politicians from both parties regularly rejecting such basic observations out of hand, claiming they govern on behalf of the public, rather than the corporate elite, even though they accept massive amounts of corporate donations and then proceed to do things like cut taxes on the rich and eliminate regulations and oversight bodies that get in the way of corporate profits.

We’ve never had much democracy in the alleged fatherland of modern democracy. It’s always been rule by the rich. We’ve never had much free speech in the home of the First Amendment. It’s always looked good on paper, but not been effectively enforced in practice, when the speech involved is critical of the establishment.

The propaganda has always been patently false. But increasingly, it seems, it is internalized and believed as factual by the heirs to the creators of the propaganda machine. This Signal chat is evidence of a degree of self-deception, of a sort of blowback of the propaganda machine, that seems somehow even more alarming than if these advisors were lying and knew they were lying. If they believe their own propaganda, what else will they believe next?

That’s what I realised with this chat transcript as well. It’s terrifying.

“If you look at what’s good for country and society, it’s to reproduce, to have kids,” Duffy declared. “That shows that you’re healthy, you’re strong, and you’re patriotic.”

“When communities have kids and families, that’s where you see growth,” Duffy told reporters last month. “We want to invest in growth, and it’s only one factor that we’re going to consider as we look at where we put our money.”
