The goddamn Trump Administration

The French aristocracy didn’t think it would be them, either.

Don’t know if folks without bluesky accounts can see these, but Rachel Maddow is currently posting a very impressive array of country-wide “Hands Off” protest crowd photos. So many cunningly written signs! (puts my “Hands off NIH!!” and obverse: “Hands off Social Security!!” into the common slot)

Edit: at @sqlrob’s excellent prompting, here’s Rachel Maddow’s uhm…specific share link

(looks kinda similar [shrug])

FYI, there’s an easy way to tell. If you use Bluesky’s functionality for sharing, rather than copying the link from the browser, it’ll give you a warning if logged out users can’t see it.

A lot of Bluesky users seem to have as being viewable only by other Bluesky users, which I get why. But I think journalists probably have their stuff visible to everyone on the internets.

I can see Maddow’s account, btw.

DOJ says judge can’t order return of Salvadoran man wrongly deported

“The United States does not have control over Abrego Garcia. Or the sovereign nation of El Salvador. Nevertheless, the court’s injunction commands that Defendants accomplish, somehow, Abrego Garcia’s return to the United States in give or take one business day. That order is indefensible,” Justice Department lawyers wrote.”

We are paying to incarcerate them there you asshole.

I think that’s how it started, but they stopped the whole “weird” stuff pretty early on.

I think he is, yeah, as @danimagoo pointed out. The Clinton, third way wing of the party is still in charge of the party apparatus, and that means folks like Carville having a big influence on the direction of the party. That certainly doesn’t mean that the media isn’t a huge problem here, ignoring more progressive democrats, but the democratic party is also part of the problem… I don’t think it’s an either/or, but a case of plenty of blame to go around.

Yeah, that’s certainly fair enough, the media was part of the problem, you won’t get an argument on that from me. But that doesn’t mean that the party isn’t also part of the problem.

Agreed, but I just don’t think that Harris ran on bringing together both wings of the party towards the end of the (incredibly short) campaign, but in trying to run to the center. The lack of a strong message on the attack on trans people and the genocidal war in Gaza didn’t help bring in the left flank…

Yeah, agreed.

I defended the Democratic Party a lot. Until fairly recently. The turning point for me was Chuck Schumer’s capitulation on the budget. To just give in and not fight at all . . . I just don’t get it. I know it wouldn’t have made a substantive difference right now, as far as the budget or the dismantling of the administrative state, but damn . . . to not even try? I’ll never understand that call. And it was the point at which I decided this party needs a major shakeup. I don’t know how to effectuate that, but it needs to happen. Bernie and AOC are still outsiders. What they do is great, but they have no leadership role in the Democratic Party and very little influence over what direction it takes on any issue.

With respect to the war in Gaza, President Biden and I are working around the clock, because now is the time to get a hostage deal and a cease-fire deal done.

And let me be clear. And let me be clear. I will always stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself, and I will always ensure Israel has the ability to defend itself, because the people of Israel must never again face the horror that a terrorist organization called Hamas caused on Oct. 7, including unspeakable sexual violence and the massacre of young people at a music festival.

At the same time, what has happened in Gaza over the past 10 months is devastating. So many innocent lives lost. Desperate, hungry people fleeing for safety, over and over again. The scale of suffering is heartbreaking.

President Biden and I are working to end this war, such that Israel is secure, the hostages are released, the suffering in Gaza ends and the Palestinian people can realize their right to dignity, security, freedom and self-determination.

I feel like Harris did have a strong statement on the genocidal war here. First, of course, we always start with how Israel has a right to defend itself. Just as “all lives matter” has been used to mean black lives don’t, that’s a phrase that’s become synonymous with excusing their atrocities. And sure enough they aren’t mentioned. The situation is a tragedy but not a violation. Rights of Palestinians only show up at the very end as something for the future, not something they have now. And as for what to do about that, well, Biden and her are working on it – which presumably means that what he was doing, getting played for a sucker enabling a genocidaire and shredding the fabric of international law in the process, was the best way forward.

I know that’s kind of the centrist thing, but I don’t care, that’s an extreme statement when you’re talking about tens of thousands of civilians getting murdered and every rule of war in the book getting violated. And speaking personally, of course I wish she won, but any appreciation for her as a human and hope she might actually try to be decent was dead by the end of that.

Hey doj dickheads: it’s called diplomacy

The only thing keeping this guy in El Salvador is ego and bigotry.

Everyone knows it was and is wrong and the administration even admitted so.

And the rare earth elements that are being mined in the US are processed in… China. (Had to be. The expertise for it didn’t exist in the US, of course.) And the US only started mining this stuff under Obama because of the feeling the US was too dependent… on China. So “let’s just mine it ourselves” turns out to not be a solution, even when actually feasible.

Ugh, the trade stuff just makes me scream about the crushing stupidity of it all, multiple times a day now.

That was definitely an own goal. I would agree with you, except for how the rest of the party reacted to it. You could tell House Dems were poleaxed, felt betrayed. And they made that really clear, too. Even Jeffries, who hasn’t exactly been Captain Bravery called it out. Let’s see whether they can get their shit together enough to kick Schumer to the curb. I’ve heard back from Merkeley and he says more progressive Dem Senators are looking at options. I don’t know whether that means replacing Schumer or pitching in to buy him a spine, but they know there is a problem.

Right? It’s like just pick up the fucking phone and ask. This isn’t negotiating prisoner exchanges with Iran, FFS.
