According to my friend, who is an import broker, that just makes things worse. Not being able to pay the tariff doesn’t make it go away and failing to do so incurs penalties. So there are importers who are receiving goods that they are willing to pay the tariffs on who can’t pay them and can’t fill contracted orders without risking massive fines. It’s worst-worst-worst case scenario.

All this bombastic shitting the bed Trump is doing here just seems so ridiculous to me. You know how you can “negotiate” better trade deals? You use fucking diplomacy.
Trump’s strategy seems to be try to set the whole world on fire and wait for others to come to him on their knees and beg for water. Apparently this is some “art of the deal” nonsense according to his sycophantic admirers. When he gets anything back in return, he’s lauded as some sort of mad genius, even though more often than not everything is worse as a result versus if he did nothing.
Trump tanks the stock markets with his stupid “liberation day” shit, he backpedals, markets go up, OMG what a smart guy! Never mind the markets are still worse off than they would have been had he never even done that and now he looks like even more of a fool.
I think about this almost every day because it rings so true.
If he seriously wanted better trade terms he would quietly get people into a room and not let them out until they make a deal. Want better terms with Vietnam? Cool, get their people and our people into a room and try to work something out.
But that’s just not immediate enough, doesn’t grab the same attention, and isn’t dramatic or interesting. So as usual Trump does everything he can to suck all the oxygen out of the room.
