Wow. We’ve had 200 penguin posts.
That is not enough.
I have no idea.
A nice discussion of the origin of the word penguin:
It originally applied to great auks, which were very much northern equivalents of penguins as black-and-white flightless sea birds and have kept the scientific name Pinguinus. And it probably is from Welsh for “white head”, though of course they at most have white on it. Other etymologies have been suggested but are not as likely, as detailed there.
Those poor penguins!
(I’ve never seen this design and it seems to me to be a weird design for this ‘message’ and perhaps, requires certain cultural knowledge. I’ve seen one, two and three snowflakes used as indicators of ‘keep frozen’ and how long the item will remain in good condition when frozen, but never this.
And it looks like it is on a litter bin - so ‘no frozen items to be put in bin’?)
ETA or does the sign with the diagonal red line mean “do not freeze penguins”. That would be very sound advice!
My wife, who grew up in the middle of her continent on a rural farm where the most advanced technology was a cow, absolutely loves penguins. She doesn’t know why, but she finds them so amazing and fun to watch. Ten years or so ago on a vacation, I paid for us to go backstage at Sea World and hang out with the penguins for a bit. It was like she became 6 again. Absolutely one of my core memories when she hesitantly asked if she could touch it and then pet the penguin. Had the dumbest, happiest grin on her face and probably had no idea the world was even existing otherwise.
and they claim penguins are flightless birds!
They merely fly in a different fluid.
