The Trans Experience

https://www.britishpathe.com/asset/90667/

“Peter Alexander, interviewed in Sydney, born and brought up as Mavis Higgins in New Zealand, speaks of his sex change from female to male. He discusses the aspects of his personality when younger which influenced his decision, his view of women in society and his plans for the future. Although Peter talks about shaving it is not clear if any medical intervention had assisted his sex change. The predominant voice in this clip is that of Alexander, dressed in jacket and tie, talking cheerily about his interest in sport, his awareness that his “male side and personality” were always dominant, his desire to marry and continue with his musical career. The story was sensationalised in the tabloid newspaper of the day “The Truth”.”

If you like horror (and possibly cursed artifacts curiosities), I can whole-heartedly recommend these:

The author also does leatherwork for sale and tattooing; I might splurge and get some paw wraps (not shown on her site, but if you follow her on Bsky, you’ll see em) when money’s not as tight.

My daughter is going to her friend’s gender reveal party this weekend. They’ve been besties since middle school.

There’s an Ann Leckie novel, Provenance which is features a culture where people don’t reach adulthood until they decide their gender.

So we’ve got an employee of a partner organization seconded to us for a bit at work. She’s trans, and I’ve known her for ages in some of the local trans spaces, but she’s not out in her public life. We’re pretty close friends, and it is taxing remembering that I have to misgender and deadname her at work. I will not mess it up for her though. Outing someone, even accidentally, is not something I can allow myself to do.

I really hate that the world isn’t accepting and people feel they have to hide who they are. I hope we can move beyond this bullshit and make it a wonderful thing when someone realizes who they really are.

That’s really hard. We have had to do that for our youngest. She is mostly out now, but there are still some that she does not want to know (because they are family members who are not accepting of that), and trying to keep that straight is really hard. Good on you for making that effort!

It’s challenging. You want to respect their identities but at the same time respect their right to keep that from people who could be toxic.

I know she just moved out of her religiously bigoted parents place and is looking at starting HRT but is keeping it quiet in public until she’s more established. I’m just reminding myself that deadnaming and misgendering her isn’t disrespect, but respect for her wishes. Still having a hard time using ‘him’ though.

I went to the local ren fair this past weekend; I took a bunch of ‘cursed aztec gold’ (aka 3d printed coins modeled after the first Pirates movie) with the intention of rewarding people who gendered me correctly. While I wasn’t there the entire day, of the ~25 coins I started with, I ended up with 5 left, and also gave away the rest of the key-tags with the trans flag, a shork, and the words “hug me” that were also 3d printed. (I’ve been handing those out at the trans meetups I’ve been too with MUCH success.)

And while I’m still deadnamed at work, I’m mostly OK with it, because of other reasons I don’t want to go into at the moment.

We have a similar situation here with one of my daughter’s friends, although in that case his Mum is aware, but has not had much contact with us lately. Easier for us, not so much for him.

And as far as getting deadnamed at work, it’s OK because I haven’t put in anything official as far as a preferred name into the system. And due to legal reasons, I can’t change my wallet name until 2031.

(And I’d show you pictures of my cursed booty, but that’d quite likely get me in trouble here. )
