Ducks inspecting my yard work

Are they finding any quacks in the concrete?

They’re scoping out your yard for possible nesting sites?

They’re regular visitors and have been coming to my yard for years. I even have a small paddling pool set out for them. The male has a distinctive limp so I know its the same pair. I hope that one day they’ll nest in my yard. Last year the female laid an egg in the paddling pool, which was weird.

ETA: I want to keep working but she is now camped outside my door.

This is nature’s way of telling you it’s time to check if last year’s batch of mead is still drinkable.

Bunny also checking out the earthworks.

I had removed the garden fence for the earthworks and put a temporary fence in place, which was full of gaps apparently. The Rabbit got in and made a nest in the radishes. I had to evict the unwanted guest before baby bunnies appeared.

Went for a couple of walks around the area I live at the weekend, and got saw lots of wonderful wildfowl.
Also, the ever-present South East London parakeets let their presence be know with a constant squawking chorus. But regrettably, they are perfectly camoflaged, and almost impossible to capture on camera!

This handsome gent? / lady? was perched on this box; it was their box, and they damn-well weren’t going to move, especially not for some pesky human wielding an odd rectangular object:

I did get a slightly irate “honk”.

I believe they’re an Egyptian goose; there’s lots around here, and I think they’re gorgeous.

Here’s some in the local lake with bonus babbies; if you’ve ever seen the UK powered-people series “Misfits”, the “youth club” from that is the orange & brown building to the right of the picture:

I also love the juxtaposition of those iconic, but admittedly brutalist tower blocks against the blue water and greenery. It’s Southmere Lake, and also made an appearance in “A Clockwork Orange.”

And here’s some cuddly Canadians:

They were all very comfortable around humans, and that last family even swam directly towards me, honking away, I suspect demanding food, of which I regrettably had none to hand.

There’s a lot of good signage all over the park asking people not to feed the birds bread, as it’s bad for them.
But I still saw people tearing up pieces to throw to them :frowning:

Most poundlands (and similar shops) have big bags of mealworms, and other similar things for outside bird feeders, duck looooove those.

I’ve been told that (defrosted) frozen peas is the best thing to feed ducks, but haven’t tried it yet. I’ve seen lots of Canada geese in the local park with “angel wing”, which is possibly caused by feeding with bread.
