I remember an article in National Geographic from the late 80s that compared the route of Odysseus to real places and events.
The author speculated that the Iliad was an older story composed for a male audience, and the Odyssey was a newer story composed for a female audience. So having a female translator might be the way to go.
Interesting hypothesis! And it’s worth remembering that the most revered poet in the Greek world was Sappho; a woman, so women could be well regarded in the literary sense.
